UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLEMENTE STOP-PA, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGARETTE-HOLD ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,064, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed July 9, 1885. Serial No. 171,045. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLEMENTE STOPPA, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cigarette-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a mouth-piece or holder for cigarettes, and this object I attain in the manner which [will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isaperspective view of my improved cigarette-holder, illustrating the manner in which the same is used. F'g. 2 is a sectional view of the holder on a larger scale than Fig. 1, showing the cigarette clamped; Fig. 3, a view showing the cigarette released, and Fig. 4 a view showing a modification.
The holder shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 consists of a tube, A, mouth-piece B. clampingarms D, and confining-ring F. The tube A is expanded at the front end, a, so as to fit snugly the paper wrapper of a cigarette, this enlarged head of the tube having a conical end, closed with the exception of a number of perforations, b. The inner end of the tube A is also expanded for the reception of a block. d, to a threaded stem, on which is secured the mouth-piece B, and to this expanded inner end of the tube are secured, by means of a ring, f, the inner ends of the clamping-arms D, the outer ends of which are enlarged, so as to form segments, which envelop the inner end of the paper wrapper of the cigarette.
f \Vhen the ring F is'moved back on the arms toward the mouth-piece B, the front ends of the arms will, owing to the elasticity of the same, be expanded, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the enlarged head ofthe tube A can be readily inserted into the end of the cigarette wrapper, the ring being then pushed forward on the arms, so as to compress the same and cause their front ends to clamp the end of the said wrapper and firmly confine the same to the tube A. (See Fig. 2.)
By the use of the improved holder the cigarette can be smoked to the end, whereas when the cigarette is carried directly in the mouth the tobacco and the paper wrapper of the cigarette become saturated with saliva at and smoke in its passage to themouth, there being 5 a free play of air around the tube to facilitate this cooling operation. I
The use of the tube A with expanded ends is not necessary to the proper carrying out of my invention. as the tube may, if desired, be
of uniform diameter throughout. Moreover, the mouth-piece may form part of the tube,
and the elasticity of the arms D may be such as to cause them to clamp the wrapper of the cigarette, the expanding of the arms being effected by means of a wedgeaing, asin Fig. 4.
The cylindrical head a of the tube A affords Elljllll support, to which the inner end of the paper wrapper of the cigarette can be clamped by the elastic arms D, and the conical or flaring head in advance of said cylindrical barrel insures the proper guidance of the wrapper onto the latter without breaking or wrinkling said wrapper.
I claim as my inventi0n- 1. A cigarette-holder consisting of a tube having a mouth-piece and a cylindrical head or barrel,a,in combination with clamps, whereby the paper wrapper of a cigarette may be secured to said cylindrical head or barrel,
all substantially as specified.
2. A cigarette-holder consisting of a tube having a mouth piece and a cylindrical head or barrel with flaring guide in advance of the same, in combination with clamps, whereby the paper wrapper of a cigarette may be confined to said cylindrical barrel, all substan tially as specified.
3. The combination of the retainingarms D with tube A, havinga mouth-piece at one end OLEMENTE STOPPA.
