UNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,946, dated August 9, 1904.
Application filed March 28, 1904.
To ctZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ISSAGHAR A. HEALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Cigarette Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding cigars or cigarettes while being smoked.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and efiicient device of this character in which cigars or cigarettes of various sizes may be quickly and easily clamped without injuring the Wrapper or interfering with the drawing of the cigar or cigarette and in which the cigar or cigarette will be securely retained, so that it may be entirely smoked or consumed.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cigar or cigarette holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 41 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 1 4: of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the holding tube or cup removed from the combined clampactuated sleeve and mouthpiece. Fig. 6 is an inner or rear end View of the holding tube or cup with the clamp removed therefrom. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the clamp.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the holding tube or cup in which the end of the cigar or cigarette is inserted.
2 denotes a clamp secured upon said. cup by a screw 3, and 4c denotes a combined clampactuating sleeve and mouthpiece which telescopes said holder and clamp.
The holding-cup 1 comprises a tubular cylindrical body 5, formed with a tapered or cup-shaped cavity 6 to receive the end of a Serial No. 200,404. (No model.)
cigar or cigarette and at its front or outer end with an annular flange or rim 7, which is cup is formed at suitable intervals around its periphery with longitudinal grooves or slots 10, the outer ends of which open into the cavity 6 and extend into the rim or flange 7, as shown at 11. i
The clamp 2 is in the form of a springmetal frame and consists of a circular head 12, having spring-arms 13 projecting at right angles from it at intervals corresponding to the grooves or slots 10 in the body of the holder. The diameter of the head 12 is the same as that of the inner or rear end of the body portion 5 of the holding-cup 1 and is formed with a central opening 1 1, through which is passed the screw 3, which engages the threaded end of the passage 8 in the end of the holding-cup.
The screw 3 is provided with amilled head which engages the head 12 and clamps the same against the end of the holding-cup, thereby holding the head 12 and the springfingers carried thereby firmly in place. The head of the screw has formed. therein the usual groove whereby it may be engaged by an instrument and readily screwed into or out of the passage 8. Thescrew 3 has also formed therein a longitudinal bore or passage 16, which communicates with the hole in the igner end of the tapered cavity 6, thereby forming a passage completely through this portion of the holder.
The outer ends of the spring-arms 13 are bent inwardly at right angles to form offset gripping-lingers 17, which grasp the end of the cigar or cigarette when the same is inserted into the holder. These offset gripping-fingers are normally seated in the recesses 11, which are formed by outer ends of the slots 10.
i The mouthpiece 4 may be formed of any suitable material, such as hard rubber, wood, bone, amber, or the like. In the outer end of said mouthpiece is formed an enlarged bore, in which is fitted a sleeve or lining 18, of aluminium or other suitable metal. The holding cup or tube is adapted to be inserted and to fit closely into this sleeve. The springarms 13, carried by said holding-tube, are engaged by the innerwall of the sleeve or lining 18 and as the cup is pushed into the sleeve will force said spring-arms inwardly, thereby firmly gripping the end of the cigar or cigarette.
WVhen it is desired to remove the end of the cigar or cigarette, the flange of the holdingcup is grasped and the cup drawn out of the sleeve or lining 18, thereby permitting the spring gripping-fingers to spring out into the slots 10, thus releasing the cigar or cigarette.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cigar or cigarette holder, the combination with a mouthpiece, of a holding tube or cup adapted to be inserted into the outer end of said mouthpiece, a spring-clamp removably secured in said holding cup, and means whereby said clamp is actuated to engage the end of a cigar or cigarette, substantially as described.
2. Ina cigar or cigarette holder, the combination with a mouthpiece, of a holding tube or cup adapted to be inserted into the outer end of said mouthpiece, longitudinally-disposed slots formed in said tube or cup, spring clamping-arms arranged in said slots and removably secured to said tube or cup, oifset gripping-fingers formed on the ends of said arms, and means arranged in said mouthpiece to force said arms and fingers into engagement with the end of a cigar, substantially as described.
3. In a cigar or cigarette holder, the combination with a mouthpiece, of a holding tube or cup adapted to be inserted into the outer end of said mouthpiece, longitudinally-disposed slots formed in said tube or cup, spring clamping-arms arranged in said slots and removably secured to said tube or cup, oflset gripping-fingers formed on the ends of said arms, a metallic sleeve arranged in the outer end of said mouthpiece to receive said holding-tube and to force said spring arms and fingers into engagement with the end of a cigar or cigarette when said holding cup or tube is pushed into said sleeve, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 4 my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
