To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RAIMUND ZEISE, a subj ect of the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, residing at Egelsdorf-Konigsee, in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quill Tubes for the Mouth pieces of Cigar and Cigarette Holders and for other Purposes, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, No. 47,373, dated September 27, 1895; in Austria, No. 4,358/45, dated October 4, 1895; in Hungary,No. 5,550, dated-October 5, 1895; in Russia, No. 26,363, dated October 12/24, 1894; in France, No. 242,179, dated October 18, 1894; in England, No. 19,519, dated October 13, 1894; in Belgium, No. 112,245, dated October 15, 1894; in SWitzerland,No. 9,227,dated October 12,1894; in Italy, No. 37 ,618 144, dated November 14,
1894; in Spain, No. 370/6,448, dated October- 20, 1894; in Sweden, No. 6,011, dated November 15, 1894; in Norway, No. 3,955, dated Ootober 16, 1894; in Denmark, No. 142, dated October 18, 1894, and in Luxemburg, No. 2,137, dated October 12, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to quill tubes for the mouthpieces of cigar and cigarette holders and for other purposes; and it consists in a quill having one end turned inside out and drawn or doubled over one or more times onto the main portions of the quill to strengthen the end of the quill, so that, though soft and pliable, it will not be easily bitten through when employed for the mouthpiece of a cigar or cigarette holder and which will not be liable Fig.
6 is a longitudinal section of one of my improved tu bes, showing how it may be employed as a holder or handle for a paint-brush. Fig. 7 shows in longitudinal section a tube having one end turned inside out and drawn only once onto and wholly parallel with the shank portion of the tube. Fig. 8 is a similar view showing one end of the tube turned out and over the shaft twice.
The tube that I employ is cut from a quill of suitable diameter and may have any required length.
The end a of the quill tube 5 is turned inside out and drawn backward over the shank portion or body of the tube. This is effected by drawing the tube-shank I) over a heated mandrel, the heat of which renders the end a so soft and pliable that it can be readily doubled and drawn over the outside of the shank portion. This drawing over of the end a may be executed in such manner that the edge a will bear directly against and substantially at right angles upon the tube-shank as shown in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive. In this manner the turned and drawn over portion will form at its edge an annular bead on the shank of the quill.
If desired, the drawing operation may be done in such manner as to form also another bead a at the outer end of the turned-over portion or extreme end of the quill. To accomplish this, it may be necessary to subject the turned-over portion of the quill to reheating in order to facilitate the required drawin g operations. The annular beads ct and 0. act to greatly stiffen and strengthen the turned-over end portion of the quill and give it an improved shape to serve as a mouthpiece for cigar and cigarette holders.
Instead of providing the turned-over portion of the quill with the beads a and a the said turned-over and drawn portion may be laid parallel with the shank of the quill, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
The end a may be turned out and over onto the quill only once, as shown in Figs. 1, 6, and
7, or it may be turned over twice, as more clearly shown at cf, Fig. The bead portion GL2 may be turned onto itself, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
A quill having the turned and drawn end portion, as described, has the advantage, When employed as a mouthpiece for cigar and cigarette holders, of being pliable and not easily bitten through, although it is soft to the teeth. Besides their reinforcing effect the beads will serve to assist in retaining the article in the mouth of the smoker. In its application as a holder or handle for a paintbrush stick the turned-over and reinforcing portion of the quill tube Will obviate all danger of splitting on insertion of the brush. In addition to these uses there are many other purposes to which the improved tube may be conveniently applied.
What I claim as my invention is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a feather quill having one end doubled outward and over onto and in contact with the outside of the shank portion of the quill, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a feather quill having one end doubled outward and over onto and in contact with the outside of the shank portion of the quill and beaded, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
RAIMUND ZEISE.
