To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mouthpiece for Smokers Articles, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to mouthpieces for smokers articles, such as pipes, and cigar and cigarette holders.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved mouthpiece of the character indicated which shall permit the smoke to be readily drawn therethrough, and which shall prevent to a greatextent the smoke or the breath of the smoker from being forced back through the mouthpiece, in order to practically eliminate the accumulation of nicotin or other extraneous matter within the stem or mouthpiece.

This invention also contemplates the provision of such a mouthpiece which shall not be encumbered so as to be objectionable, and which shall be simple, inexpensive, convenient, efficient and serviceable.

This invention resides essentially in providing means at the inner end of the mouthpiece for continuing the duct so as to open laterally, the invention also residing in certain details of construction and in the combination of component parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters have been employed to denote corresponding parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mouth piece constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

Referring specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the mouth piece of a pipe or cigar or cigarette holder, which is provided with the usual duct 11. This mouth piece may be constructed of the usual materials employed, such as amber, rubber, and the like, and is usually removable from the stem of a pipe or the holder proper for cigars or cigarettes. also be of any suitable shape or contour, the inner end being preferably tapered.

In carrying out the present invention, a series of short longitudinal grooves 12 are cut or otherwise fashioned in the periphery of the mouth piece at its inner end, and an annular baffle or ring 13 is slipped over the mouth piece and is engaged thereto at the forward ends of the grooves 12 to project from the mouth piece. This ring or annulus 13 may be provided with a forwardly or outwardly projecting lip 14 around its inner edge for engaging the mouth piece, so that the ring may be better held in position. A cap 15 has its edge slipped or fitted over the inner or rear end of the mouthpiece and binds upon the inner end of the mouth piece due to the taper of the mouthpiece, so that the edge of the cap is spaced from the baffle 13, in order to permit the grooves 12 to open laterally and in order that the cap will be spaced from the inner or rear end of the mouth piece. Thus, the duct 11 will be continued forwardly or outwardly over the rear or inner end of the mouth piece and then to open laterally at interval points around the periphery of the mouth piece. When the mouth piece is employed in con-- nection with a pipe or cigar or cigarette holder, it will be noted that the smoke in being drawn through the duct 11 will not pass directly into the mouth but will be directed forwardly through the grooves 12 and then laterally out of the forward ends of the grooves, adjacent the bafile, into the hollow of the mouth. The provision of the cap will partially prevent or tend to prevent the smoke and the breath of the smoker from being forced backwardly through the mouth piece, thus greatly eliminating the accumulation of nicotin or other foreign matter. The smoker will therefore receive the full benefit of the tobacco or weed being smoked and without any abnormal injurious efi'ect.

The cap and bafiie may be stamped from suitable sheet metal or may be otherwise fashioned from various cheap or valuable metals or other materials, according to the whim of the user. The said parts may be readily applied and removed from the mouthpiece for the purpose of cleansing, repair or replacement, and it will be seen that the mouthpiece may be readily and inexpensively fashioned in accordance with the present invention.

In view of the foregoing, taken in connection With the drawings, the advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be apparent, it being noted that objects aimed at have been carried out satisfactorily and that the present device pro.- vides a desirable one for the purposes for which it is designed.

Having thus described the invention,\vliat is claimed as new is:

1. A month piece for smokers articles having its inner end tapered and having a series of short longitudinal grooves in its periphery at its inner end, and a cap fitting over the inner end of the mouth piece.

2. A month piece for smokers articles having its inner end tapered and having a series of short longitudinal grooves in its periphery at its inner end, a battle ring on the mouth piece at the outer ends of the grooves, and a cap fitting over the inner end of the mouth piece.

3. A mouth piece for smokers articles having a short outer groove in its inner end, a battle ring slipped over the mouth piece and engaged thereto at the outer end of the groove to project from the mouthpiece, and a cap having its edge slipped over the inner end of the mouth piece to bind thereon.
