J'AmEsANoHoR; OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SANITARY CIGARETTE HOLDER.
A l cation med August 1, 1927. Serial No. 209,698.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a sanitary cigarette holder, and has forits object the provision of a cigarette holder which will be maintained in sanitary .COHClltlOIl at all t1mes,and be such, as to affect to a minimum the smoke ordinarily drawn from a cigarette.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cigarette holder provided with a retaining member in which theholder is positioned when not in use.
Another object of the invention is the pro.
' vision of a cigarette holder retaining member having a cleaning member. mounted thereon which will serve to clean the bore of the cigarette holder and at the same time, plug the bore and prevent entry of foreign material therein.
Another object is the provision of acigarette holder made of comparatively soft material, and having the mouthpiece end reinforced by a sleeve or bushing inserted. in the bore.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cigarette holder and retainer so arranged and constructed that the two may be attached together and form a cylindrical member of attractive appearance.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form apart of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of. the inven tion showing the cigarette holder attached to the retaining member. v
Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is acentral longitudinal vertical sectional view of the invention.
The cigarette holder which is made from comparatively soft material, such as wood,
rubber, or composition such as bakelite, or the like, comprises the mouthpiece portion 7 having a bore 8 extending therethrough and communicating with the socket 9 whichis ordinarily tapered, and the outer end 10 of which is enlarged to provide the shoulder 11. The tapered end of the mouthpiece 7 is reinforced by a preferably metallic sleeve 12 inserted therein in a press fit. The outer end of the cigarette holder is turned to form a surface 13 concave in cross section. A cup shaped retaining member 14 is provided for receiving the tapered end of the cigarette holder, the cigarette holder being pressed into the cup shaped member in a press 'fit. Extending axially of the cup shaped member is a cleaning member comprising an outer covering 15 of some material, such as c otton,.or the like, and having a CGIltIRljtlffQnlIlg member 16 formed from wire or the like. The end 17 of this cleaning member is angularly turned after being projected through the opening 18 formed in the base of the cup shaped member.
In operation the cigarette is placed in the cigarette holder in the usual manner and the mouthpiece 7 retained in the month. By forming the socket at the portion 10 of enlarged diameter, a burning or charring of the outer end of the cigarette holder is prevented when the cigarette is smoked down closeto the holder. This is quite an important feature of the invention as it permits the construction of the cigarette holder from wood, or other material easily scorched the cleaning member as it is passing there-.
through. The cleaning member may also be used to eject the cigarette butt from the holder, should it stick tightly therein, and be irremovable by customary methods. I The formation of the concave surface 13 on the cigarette holder serves as a finger grip and the periphery of the retaining member is formed concave adjacent its base to afford a similar finger gripping surface so that the cigarette holder may be removed from the retainer.
WVith a. device constructed in this manner a sanitary cigarette holder which may be cheaply manufactured is provided. Also a cigarette holder and retaineris provided so that the bore of the cigarette holder does not become filled with foreign material when placed in the pocket of the user and is alretainer from vending machines.
It is believed obvious that the cover or re-.
ceptaole may also be used for covering the end of a smokers pipe stem, the cleaning member projecting into the stem and affording the beneficial results when used with a pipe the same as described herein for the use of the device with a cigarette holder. In this connection, the pipe stem and the cigarette holder maybe generically termed a smoke conduit.
l/Vh'ile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention What outwardly from said I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cigarette holder described, comprising: a substantially cupshaped member having an opening formed axially its base; a cleaning member projected through said opening and extending cup-shaped member axially thereof, one end of said cleaning member being angularly turned to lie in en retainer of the class gagement With the outer surface of said base. 1
-2. A cigarette holder retainer ofthe class described, comprising: a substantially cup shaped memberadapted for the reception in a snug fit of one end of the cigarette holder; and an axially extended detachable cleaning member on said retainer for projecting through the bore of said holder upon insertion of the same into engagementvvith said retainer. I
In testimony Whereof'I have signed the foregoingspecification.
