- Be it known that PAUL J. Slrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Cigar and Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a specification.

his invention relates to a combined cigar and cigarette holder and has for its prin- *cipal object to provide a holder of the above mentioned character which can be readily and easily changed from a cigar holder to lln-the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, and referrin more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 3, t, 5 an 6 of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the barrel of a cigar holder and is internally threaded at its rearward end as shown at 2 in Fig. l of the drawings. The internally threaded end 2 of the barrel 1 is adapted to receive the externally threaded end 3 of the stem 4. The stem 4 is provided at its op 0- site end with the usual mouthpiece 5. he stem d is provided with the usual central longitudinal bore 6 which communicates with the bore 7 of a slightly less diameter formed in the mouthpiece 5 of the stem 4. The forward end. 4 is provided with a seat 8 which has its apex communicating with the longitudinal extendin bore 6 in the stem 4.

The inner wall of t to barrel 1 is provided with a pair of opposed longitudinally extending slots 9 and 10 for the purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.

Adapted to be seated within the longitudinally extending bore 6 in the stem t and within the seat 8 formed in the forward end of the stem d is an auxiliary holder forming the cigarette holder, which includes an elongated stem 11 and provided at its forward end with an enlarged cup-shaped member 12. The stem 11 is provided with a central longitudinally extending bore 14: for communication with the bore 7 formed in the mouthpiece of the stem 4: for the purpose of providing a direct passage or outlet for the admittance of smoke.

The barrel '12 formed upon the stem 11 of the cigarette holder is adapted to seat within the pocket 8 formed in the forward end of the stem 4 and is provided on its outer face with a pair of opposed lugs 13 and 13' respectively. These lugs 13 and 13' are adapted to slidably sit Within the longitudinal slots 9 and 10 formed on the inner walls of the barrel 1.

1165 The stem 4 is provided with an elongated slo 15 which communicates with the cen tral longitudinal extending bore 6 and the end of the elongated slot 15 terminated into notches or bayonet slots 16 and 17 re ectively. The stem 11 of the cigarette ho der is providedwith a screw threaded aperture no I 18 for the purpose of receiving the threaded screw 19 which is adapted to be slidably mounted within the elongated slot 15 formed in the stem 4: adjacent the forward end thereof for the purpose of moving the stem ll and the barrel 12 carried at the forward end thereof within the barrel 1 of the cigar holder for the purpose of moving the cigarette holder to its extended position, as

shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The

screw 19 forwardly in the'slot 15 after the same has reached the forward notch 16 the cigarette holder will be in its extended position and may be held therein by moving g the screw 19 into the locking notch 16. The lugs 13 and 13' carried by the barrel 12 ot the cigarette holder will be slidably guided within the slots 9 and 10 formed in the bar rel 1 of the cigar holder so as to assure the alining movement of the cigarette holder within the cigar holder and further providc a means whereby the cigarette holder may be held in its extended position.

When it is desired to use the device for a cigar holder the cigarette holder 12 is retracted by slidably moving the screw 19 within the slot to its rearward position and locking the same within the notch 1? communicating with the slot 15 and in this osition the barrel 12 of the cigarette holder will be caused to seat within the pocket formed in the forward end of the stem t and will thus allow the barrel 1 to receive the forward end of a cigar and furthermore by having the parts of the cigarette holder complementary with those of the cigar holder the barrel 12 or the cigarette ho der will .aid in supporting the cigar in the barrel 1.

In the modifications shown in Figs. 7, 8,

9, 10 and 11 of the drawings the numeral 20 designates the barrel of a cigar holder and is provided at its rearward end with the stem 21 A mouthpiece 22 is detachably se' cured to the free end of the stem 21 in the well known manner. The barrel 20 of the cigar holder is provided at its rearward end with the tapering seat or pocket'23. Ex-

tending from this seat or pocket 23 is a longitudinal central bore 24, This bore 24 communicates with a similar bore 25 formed in the mouthpiece 22. The inner walls of the barrel 20 of the cigar holder are provided with two pairs of opposed longitudinally extending slots 26 and 27 respectively and 28 and 29 respectively. One pair or the opposed slots extending rearwardly in the we ls of the barrel 20 into and terminating within the pocket 23 formed therein. The other pair oil opposed slots 28 and 29 extend a short distance from the open end of the barrel 20 as more clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. 7

A collar or flange 31 is carried at the forward end of the sleeve 30 and extending forwardly of this flanged sleeve 30 is an externally threaded member 31'. This externally threaded member 31' is provided with an axially formed bore for the purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. Adapted to be received in the seat 23 and the longitudinally extending-bore 2% formed within the barrel 20 and the stem 21 of the ciar holder is a cigarette holder including a barrel 3-3 of the same shape as the pocket 23 so as the same-may easily seat therein and carry or terminate into a rearwardly extending internally threaded sleeve 3a The internally threaded sleeve 34 forms the stem of the cigarette holder and is adapted to receive the externally threaded stem 31 which is carried by the mouthpiece 22.

This will be accomplished by reason of the fact that the threaded member 31 is threaded into the internally threaded stem 3% of the cigarette holder whereby the mouthpiece 22 Wlll be caused to be tihtened up against the stem 21.

cigarette holder is then in position with relation to the barrel 20 of the ci ar holder in such a manner that the oppose lugs 35 and 35' formed on the outer face of the barrel 33 of the cigarette holder are in communicatioh with the shorter slots or 29 respectively formed on t e inner walls of the barrel 23 and by causing the threaded member 31' of the mouth iece 22 to be received within the interna 1y threaded stem reeves 28 and 2 within the barrel 20 and reached the inner ends of the slots 28 and 29."

' In this position the ci arette holder as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings is ready for use as a cigarette holder. The smoke emitted from the cigarette will pass through the axially extendin opening 32 formed in the externally threa ed member 31 and through the bore of the mouthpiece 22.

It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that a combined cigar and cigarette holder has been provided whereby a cigar holder can in one instance be used for the purpose of holding a cigar and in another instance be so adjusted as to accommodate the holding of a cigarette.

The simplicity of a device of the above 4 mentioned character renders it of great value I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the splrit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

What I claim as new and desire by Letters Patent is 1. A combined cigar and cigarette holder, a barrel, a stem therefor including a mouthpiece, a separable member movable longitudinally within said barrel and stem, and forming an auxiliary holder, and means for locking the said auxiliary holder in its extended and withdrawn positions.

A combined cigar and cigarette holder including an outer barrel, an inner barrel movable longitudinally therein, said barrels being respectively adapted to hold cigars and cigarettes, a stem coacting with both of said barrels, said outer barrel provided with diametrically opposed grooves in the inner walls thereof, lugs on said inner barrel adapted to operate in said grooves, and means in connection with said stem for retaining the inner barrel in its adjusted positions.

3. A combined cigar and cigarette holder including an outer barrel, an innerbarrel movable longitudinally therein, said barrels being respectively, adapted to hold cigars and cigarettes, a stem coacting with both of said barrels, said outer barrel provided with diametrically opposed grooves in the inner walls thereof, lugs on said inner barrel operating in said grooves, the inner barrel being adapted for partial rotation within the outer barrel in the disposition of said inner barrel to adjusted positions, and means in connection with said stem for retaining the inner barrel in its adjusted positions.
