To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT GRnnNwALo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewel-Tweezers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refer- ..ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to tweezers for the purpose of holding jewels, and particularly diamonds. In tweezers for this purpose, it is necessary that the jaws be of a type which will securely hold the diamond from falling, becausethe article is small and liable to be lost if dropped upon the floor when exhibiting. The diamonds are kept in racks or in paper packages and must be selected out by the tweezers and be held out for considera le lengths'of time for examining or exhibiting. Various devices have been provided for holding jewel tweezers automatically closed, such as a sliding latch. or a pair of springs mounted on depressible pins for opening the tweezers, the said springs holding the tweezers in a normally closed position. .7

It is the object of my invention to provide tweezers which will be normally closed by their own inherent springiness, and a convenient and inexpensive means for opening the tweezers when desired, and this I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed wherein the tweezers are opened by depressible pins, and the natural spring of the metal of the instrument utilized for keeping it in normallyclosed position. and for pushing the pins out of depressed position.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof.

The tweezers are formed of two opposed members 1 and 2, suitably soldered and riveted together at 3. The jaws at the ,end'of each member are suitably roughened at 4 to maintain a tight hold on the jewel 5, and have preferably a set of teeth 6, 6, the inner faces of which are cut out at 7 to form a set a cut jewel.

The tubes are of a size that will not reach across the space between the said members, thereby preventing the complete closure of the tweezers, and the pins are preferably upset at 11, 11, after they are inserted into the tubes so as to prevent them from falling out. I

The operation of the instrument is easily understood. WV hen it is desired to open the jaws of the tweezers, the pins are pushed in by the fingers, each pin pressing outwardly the tweezer member opposite to it. The jewel is then picked up by the jaws and the pins released. This will permit the jaws to close on the jewel and they will remain closed, securely holding it until the operation again depresses the pins.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In gem tweezers, the combination of a pair of metallic grasping members rigidly secured togetherat one end, jaws for holding a gem at the other end, a pair of smooth depressible pins, and means for freely slid-' bers holds them normally together, and

holds the depressible pins in a normally extended position.

2. In gem tweezers, the combination of a. pair of metallic grasping members rigidly secured together at one end, jaws for holding a gem at the other end, a pair of smooth depressible pins with heads therefore, and a pair of smooth tubular extensions from the apertures in the sides of the grasping members, extending inwardly therefrom, whereby the pins are freely slidably mounted in the grasping members, and whereby the spring in the said members'holds them normally together, and holds the depressible pins in a normally extended position.
