SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 660,489, dated Octoberv 23, 1900.
Application led October 7, 1899.
Beit known that LWILLIAM G. CONN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlestown, in the county ot' Clark and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful'Watchmakers Tool, of which the following is a speciication.
This' invention relates to watchmakers tools, and has for its object to provide an improved implement which is capable of gripping either of the plates of the watch-movement and at the same time holding one of the parts of the latter, so that the plate and the said part of the movement may be simultaneously placed in position, so as to facilitate the assembling of the parts of the movement to preserve the relative arrangement thereof and to prevent breaking of pivots and other fragile parts. It is especially designed for positioning the escapement-lever so as to insure the proper arrangement and to prevent breaking of the pivots thereof.
To these ends the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure lis a top plan View of a top plate of a watch-movement having the present implement applied thereto and holding a part of an escapement-lever. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken through the pivotal or hinged connection between the parts of the tool. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the tool. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the intermediate member thereof.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, the present tool comprises opposite outer members or levers l and 2, respectively, and an intermediate lever or member 3, of which one of the outer Serial No. 732,934. No model.)
members and the intermediate member are of substantially the same length, and the other outer member is shorter than either of the former members. All of the members have a common pivotal or hinged connection 4, located intermediate of the ends thereof, so that they are adapted to be rocked upon a common center.
At one and the same side oi' the pivotal connection each member is formed into a clamping-jaw 5, and at its opposite end is enlarged to form a iinger plate or piece 6, which is serrated or roughened upon its outer face to facilitate gripping the plate. n
Fastened to the inner side of thetingerplate of each outer memberis a leaf-spring 7, which is bowed inwardly and toward the pivotal connection of the members and has its free inner end frictionally engaging the adjacent side of the intermediate mem ber, so as 'to close or normally hold together the opposite outer ends of the several jaws 5. By this arrangement all of the jaws may be opened or spread apart by pressing inwardly upon the linger-plates of the outer members, and the longer or top member may be opened independently ot the lower short member by pressing upon the finger-plates of the outer longer member and the adjacent intermediate member.
To form the pivotal connection between themembers, each of the latter is provided with a central lateral enlargement 8, carrying bearing-ears, which are hingedly connected by means of a pivot-pin 9. As shown in Fig. 3, the upper member l is provided with a pair of pendent spaced ears 10, each of which is located inward from the adjacent longitudinal edge of the member. The opposite lower or outer member 2 is provided with a central upstanding ear 1l, which is located intermediate of the ears of the member l. The intermediate member is provided with a pair of ears 12, which are located at opposite edges of the enlarged portion of the member and project equally at opposite sides thereof and at substantially right angles to the plane of the member. Provided centrally of the enlargement of the intermediate member, as shown in Fig. 5, is an opening or perforation 13 for the reception of the ears of the other members, those of the upper mem- IOO ber 1 being inserted from one side of the intermediate member and those of the other member 2 being inserted fromfthe other side of the said intermediate member, all of the ears fitting closely together and hingedly `connected by the pivot-pin 9. One end of the latter is screw-threaded, as at 14, so as to be fixedly fitted into a correspondingly-threaded opening 15 in one of. the ears of the intermediate member, and the opposite end ot' the pivot-pin is provided with a head 16, which is countersunk in the outer side of the opposite ear of the member and provided wit-h a suitable screw-driver slot for applying and Aremoving the pivot-pin.
In the operation of the tool a part 17 of the watch-movement, such as the escapementlever, is picked up between the outer member 2 and the intermediate member. The tool is then applied to the top plate 18, the latter being received between the upper or outer member 1 and the adjacent side of the intermediate member. This application of the tool is had by reason the independent operation of the members thereof, as hereinbefore set forth. Thus it will be seen that the part 17 is held between a pair of the members, and the entire tool is held to the plate by the intermediate member and the other outer member; The part 17 and the plate may be then simultaneously fitted to the watch-move ment, thereby preserving the relative position of the parts and preventing the pivots of the lever from becoming broken. After the part and the plate have been placed in position the tool may be removed by pressing the outer members together, which will open all of the jaws, so as to release the part 17 and also disengage the tool from the plate.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A Watchmakers tool comprising an in- 'termediate member having an outer engageeo,4se I ing port-ion and an inner handle portion, and the oppositely-disposed spring-pressed outer members having inner handle portions and outer engaging portions, one of the outer members being shorter than the intermediate member, wherebythe said outer members are adapted to be operated independently of each other to permit one of the plates and one of the other parts of a watch-movement to be independently gripped and simultaneously held and placed in position, substantially as described.
2. A Watchmakers tool, comprising opposite outer spring-pressed members, and an intermediate member, each outer member being located entirely at its respective side of the intermediate member, all of the members having a common intermediate pivotal connection, forming jaws normallyin mutual engagement, and operating finger-pieces for the respective jaws, the intermediate finger-piece being longer than one of the outer fingerpieces, and the outer members beingv independently movable out of engagement with the intermediate member.
3. A Watchmakers tool, comprising opposite outer members, an intermediate member, each outer member being located entirely at its respective side of the intermediate member, a vcommon pivotalv connection for all of the members, forming jaws in mutual engagement, and finger-pieces for the respective jaws, the intermediate finger piece being longer than one of the outer finger-pieces, and opposite springs interposed between the intermediate finger-piece and t-he respective outer nger-pieces.
