POCKET-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,104, dated April 5, 1892.

Beit known that I, BRUNO voN BLTZINGS- LWEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to improvements in pocket-knives or handles for surgical instruments; and the invention consists of a handle for knife-blades, surgical instruments, and the like which incloses the knife-blade in a reliable manner and can be opened by a pressure upon the spring-acting frame in such a way that the blade is drawn out and then kept hold of by jaws at the open end of the frame, so that the blade can be handled for use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are front views of my improved pocket-- knife when closedg'and Fig. 3 is a front view of the same when opened, one of the covering-plates being removed. Fig. 4 is a back View of lthe covering-plate. Figs. 5 and 6 are longitudinal sections of the pocket-knife with one and two blades, respectively. Figs. 7 and 8 are modifications, and Figs. 9 and 10 represent the frame of the handle.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The main parts of my improved pocketknives are the frame B, Fig. 9,- the coveringplates P P, and the blade K. The frame is formed of a U-shaped metal strap B, the free ends of which are inwardly bent so as to form jaws b b. The inner shank portions B of the frame are somewhat thinner, so that they receive a certain spring action. The upper portions of the frame are cut off in line fr, Fig. 9, whereby two separate links b b are formed,which links are provided with holes for the plate-pins and bent atA their thinner ends so as to form inwardly-projecting hooks o o, as clearly shown in Fig. l0. The covering or side plates Pare at their inner surfaces provided with guide-grooves u and are riveted to the frame-strap B in the usual manner. The links b b are likewise riveted to the said side plates by means of pivot-pins n n in such' a manner that the hooks o o .are located over the ends of the frame-Shanks B B', and by the jaws' b b an opening for the knife-blade is formed. The blade is provided at its base portion with a guide-pin r, projecting on both sides, and with lateral notches lc. Before the covering-plates P are riveted to the framestrap the blade is placed between the shanks of the said frame-strap, so that when the plates are fastened to the latter the pin r slides in the guide-grooves of the said plates. When the pocket-knife is to be used, the hook-shaped ends o of the links b, and simultaneously therewith the shank ends of the frame-strap B, are pressed down, whereby the jaws b of the said links are moved apart and the opening of the handle is widened, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the blade K, which before was kept within the handle by the jaws b, is allowed to drop out until the slide-pin ris caught bythe end of the guide-grooves rt of the plates P. The hooks o are then released from the pressure and the jaws b moved inwardly by the spring action of the shanks Bexerted on the hooked ends of the links b, so that the jaws b engage the notches 7c of the blade and keep the same in reliable position for use. Vhen the knife is to be closed, the hooks o are pressed down again and the notches la of the blade released from the jaws of the links b, so that the blade drops into the handle. The hooks are then released again from the pressure and the jaws moved inwardly, whereby the blade is prevented from dropping out of the handle.

Instead of a knife-blade a button-hook S may be used, which maybe provided with one notch instead of two notches. In this case only one link bis used, which actsin the same manner as described before. If the pocketknife has two blades, an intermediate partition-plate A is used within the handle and the blades placed between the said partition-plate and the respective covering-plates. The links b are then pivoted to the handle in opposite position, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and the blades so arranged that the same drop out of the openings at the opposite ends of the handle. Of course the handle can be made without the blades inclosed in the same. In this case the guide-grooves on the covering-plates are omitted and the blades are inserted into the handle by widening the opening formed IOC by the jaws b in the manner described, and the notches of the blade are taken hold of by the said jaws, as described before. Th ese handles are specially adapted for surgical in struments, so that one handle can be used for instruments of different shapes and purposes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A handle for pocket-knives, consisting of a U-shaped frame-strap, covering-plates fastened to the frame-strap, and links with inwardly-bent jaws pivoted to the coveringplates and pressing against the Shanks of the frame-strap, in combination with a knifeblade or anyother blade havin glateral notches to be engaged by the inwardly-bent jaws of the aforesaid links, substantially as set forth.

2. In a pocket-knife, the combination of a hollow handle the covering or side plates of which are provided with guide-grooves, with links provided with inwardly-extendingjaws pivoted to the covering-plates and pressing against the shanks of the eut-off metallic U- shapcd frame-strap of the handle, and a blade having pins which slide in the guide-grooves of the covering-plates and being provided with lateral notches to be engaged by the inwardly-bent jaws of the aforesaid links, substantially as set forth.

3. A handle for pocket-knives, consisting of U-shaped metallic frame-straps having one shank cut off, an intermediate plate placed between the said frame-straps, covering-plates having guide-grooves and being fastened to the frame-straps so that the intermediate plate is inclosed in the handle, and links with inwardly-bent jaws pivoted to the coveringplates and the intermediate plate and pressing against the eut-off Shanks of the framestraps, in combination with knife or other blades having pins which slide in the guidegrooves of the covering-plates and notches to be engaged by the inwardly-bent jaws of the aforesaid links, substantially as set forth.
