CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Martinis STARCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Cutters, of which the following is aspecification.

My invention relates toimprovements in cigar tip cutters. One of its objects is to provide an efficient, simple and durable cigar tip cutter of exceedingly light weight and smooth exterior to adaptv it to be conveniently carried about in the pocket or at tached to a watch chain.

Another object is to provide a cutter so shaped as to be properly balanced with reference to the cigar tip and with reference to the finger and thumb, both before and during the cutting operation.

Another object is to provide a hole of ample diameter in a cutter of light weight and small compass.

Another object is to provide a cutter in which the movement of the cutter members relative to each other is limited in both directions.

My invention also comprises certain details of form, combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings in which:

The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiments of my invention.

As illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, A and B represent the two cutting members in the form of thin circular disks or plates of sheet metal, preferably sheet steel. Each of said members is provided with a tip hole 3 with beveled or sharpened edges to cut through the cigar tip. of a stud or rivet 4 preferably finished substantially flush with the faces of members A and B. The rivet 4 and tip holes 3 are so positioned that when the members A and B are in the closed position or superimposed one upon the other illustrated in Fig. 2 that the tip holes 3 will be entirely out of alinement with each other, and will be positioned in opposite semi-circles of the disks, and so that when the members A B are in the open position illustrated in Fig.1, the tip holes will be in perfect alinement with each other ready for the insertion of a cigar tip, also preferably so that the tip holes in the open position will occupy a position coincident with the center of both the short and long axis of the cutter. This relative arrangement of the parts results in the cutter being perfectly balanced when seated upon and relative to the cigar tip, and also provides for its being balanced relative to the finger and thumb when held between the finger and thumb on the line of greatest axis of the cutter, and the strain during the act of cutting continues to be between and substantially in line with the points at which force is applied to the cutter members, and the equilibrium of the parts is not disturbed. The arrangement illustrated also provides for tip holes of maximum diameter in a cutter of prescribed dimensions. A stud or pin 8 carried by member A engages a curved slot 9 in member B which slot is concentric with the rivet 4:, said pin 8 and slot 9 serving to limit the relative movement of members A and B in both directions. The projecting end of pin 8 is preferably substantially flush with the outer face of member B.

The cutter as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 when closed presents the characteristics of a smooth round disk without projections of any kind, and is about the size of and may be carried in the pocket the same as an ordinary coin.

In the modification Figs. 7 and 8 the cutter members A and B are provided with tip holes 10 and pivotally united by means of a tubular or perforated rivet 14 which enables the cutter to be readily attached to a chain or key-ring. A tubular rivet may be employed in the form Figs. 1 and 2 if desired. The members A and B are also provided with inwardly curved finger grips 15 and 16 so located as to maintain the tip holes substantially in line with the points at which force is applied to the cutter during the entire cutting operation. A pin 18 and curved slot 19 serve tolimit the relative movement 01": members A and B.

In the modification Figs. 9 and 10 cutter members A and B are pivotally united by a rivet 24: and provided with tip holes 22. In place of the slot 9 and pin 8 1 provide a slot 29 in member A and a headed stud 28 riveted or secured to member 13 the head of the stud 28 serving in onnection with rivet 24 to hold the adjacent faces of the members A and B in contact with each other at opposite sides of the tip holes.

The article or mechanism herein illustrated and described is capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

A cigar tip cutter comprising two circular disk shaped cutter members pivotally connected together at one edge and each provided with a tip hole at one side of the center with cutting edges, a stud carried by one of said cutter members engaging a curved slot in the opposite member concentrio with said pivot to limit the relative movement of the cutter members in each direction the position of said members and tip holes relative to each other being such that said tip holes register with each other at one extremity of the cutter movement and are Wholly out of alinement when the cutter members are superimposed one upon another at the other extremity of the cut ter movement, and so that When the top holes register with each other the weight of the cutter members is evenly distributed upon axes at right angles to each other and intersecting at the center of the tip hole to cause the cutter members to retain a balanced position when seated upon a cigar tip.
