Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN BAPTISTE BoU- OHARD, residing at N orth Grosvenor Dale, county of Windham, in the State of Connecticertain new and useful Improvements in Pallet-Setting Implements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to pallet-setting implements.
The object of my invention is to provide an implement which will hold the pallet in position and at the same time protectthe same from the flame of the lamp.
A further object is to provide means adapted to indicate when sufficient heat has been. used to soften the cement used in setting the bearing of the pallet; and my invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the implement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the implement. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section ment, all of the removable parts being removed; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section through the anvil of the implement.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a handle provided with a stop 2.
Disposed in the handle 1 is a shank 3, formed integral with a body 4, which body is provided with an enlarged outer end 5, ad apted to serve as the anvil of the implement.
The body 4 is provided with a screwthreaded opening 6, adapted to hold a screwthreaded standard 7, which is provided at its upper end with a slot 8.
Disposed longitudinally of the shank and handle is a bent lever 9, provided with a hooked end 10, its central portion being disposed in the slot 8 and rockably maintained in position by means of the pivot 11. The stop 2 is placed directly in the path of movement of the lever 9 and is adapted to limit the movement thereof.
The shank 4 is provided with a screwthreaded opening 12, adapted to receive a set-screw 13.
Disposed on the set-screw 13 is a washer 14, and disposed on the set-screw between its head and the washer 14 is one end of a bent spring 15, having its opposite end provided with a slot 16, and also formed with recessed jaws 17, adapted to clamp a pallet or other part of a watch 18. The rear portion of the walls of the slot 16 is engaged by the hooked end 10 of the lever 9, so that pressure on the end of the lever 9 adjacent the handle 1 is adapted to raise the spring 15 and release the pallet 18 or other part held by the recessed jaws 17.
The anvil 5 of the implement is provided with an opening 19, extending therethrough, which opening is adapted to receive one end of the arbor of the pallet 18. The shank 4 is provided with a rectangular opening 20, through which is inserted a squared bar 21,
secured to the spring 15, as by the pin 22.
Disposed on the bar 21 is a helical spring 23, having one of its ends thrusting against the under surface of the shank 4 and havingits opposite end thrusting against a thumbnut 24, which is in screw-threaded engagee ment with the free end of the squared bar. The object of the spring 23 is to maintain the spring 15 in depressed position, so as to firmly hold the part being operated upon, and. the object of the thumb-nut 24 is to provide an adjustment of the pressure of the spring 23 to suit different sizes of work.
The outer edge of the anvil 5 is provided with a recess 25, adapted to hold a small quantity of cement of the same kind as is generally used for setting the bearings in watches. The recess 26 on one side of the anvil 5 is adapted to receive the projecting part of certain classes of work.
In the operation of the invention, the part 18 being held beneath the spring 15, cement of the same character as that which holds the work together is deposited in the recess 25. The lower face of the anvil 5 is then disposed over the flame of the lamp and held there until the cement in the recess 25 is softened. When this cement softens, the operator Will know that the cement holding the part 18 will also be soft, when the necessary adjustment can be made.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
v 1. In a pallet-setting implement, a supporting-body, a spring member carried on said body and forming therewith a clamp, means for adjusting the tension of said spring member, and a lever pivotally mounted on the supporting-body in engagement with said spring member, substantially as described.
2. In a pallet-setting implement, a supporting-body, a spring member carried on said body and forming therewith a clamp, means for adjusting the tension of said spring member, an upright arm on said supporting member, and a lever pivotally mounted on said upright arm and having a hooked end in engagement with said spring member, substantially as described.
3. In a pallet-setting implement, a sup- 1 porting-body having an enlarged end and provided with openings, a spring member carried on said body and forming therewith a clamp, a squared bar disposed through one of said openings and m engagement with said spring member, a coiled spring disposed on the bar, means to vary the tension oil said coiled spring, an upright arm disposed in another of said openings, and a lever pivot ally mounted. on said bar andv having a hooked end, in engagement with said spring member, substantially as described.
