PATENT FRED H. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GENEVA OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET-CA SEFOR OPTICIANS LENSES, 8L0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,984, dated March 14, 1899.
Application filed March 1 6, 1 8 9 8.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I FRED H. SMITH, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Cases for Opticians Lenses, &c., of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawin gs,formin ga part of this specification. I
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a view incentral transverse section through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section with'the cover in closed position.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective construction of case or holder whereby the sets of lenses and other proper appliances usual to opticians testing outfits may be safely and conveniently packed and carried in very small compass, the whole being preferably of such size as to conveniently fit within the pocket of the user. v
The invention will appear from the description fol1owing,and will be particularly pointed outin the claim at the end of this specification.
The lenses A are held within suitable grooves Z) of the case-bodyB. This case-body B is preferably made of wood, with its exterior covered with leather and its, interior lined with cloth or like soft material that will serve to protect the lenses. The ends of the casebody B have the raised vertical portions 1), that will extend sufficiently high to protect those parts of the lenses that extend above the top of the grooves or seats 5. The casebody B is cemented or otherwise conveniently attached to the flexible cover-strip O, that thus serves to close the bottoms of the grooves b,wherein the lenses A are held. This coverstrip O has attached thereto a pocket D, that will receive the test-cards, such as are usually employed by Opticians, and the cover-strip O is also provided with a loop E to retain the prism-bar F. One of the end portions 0 of the flexible cover-strip O is provided with sockets c to engage the retaining-buttons 0 that are fixed to the opposite flexible portion 0 at the front of the case-body B.
When the lenses A are placed within the case-body B, the flexible cover-strip 0 will be Serial No. 674,135. (No model.)
turned to the position seen in Fig. 3, the buttons c? of the front flap c engaging with the sockets c on the end portion 0 of the coverstrip 0 and serving to securely hold the ends of the cover-strip 0 together. At such time the prism-bar F will be within the loop E and will come opposite the rear edge of the casebody B, while the pocket D will extend over the top of the case-body, and inasmuch as the pocket D is'faced with suitable padding d of some soft material the lenses will be securely protected. It will thus be seen that the lenses will be effectively retained in place and inclosed by the cover-strip O, the pocket of which also serves as a retainer for testing cards, while the loop E, carried by the coverstrip 0, affords a convenient means for retaining the prism-bar in place. Inasmuch as the cover-strip 0 both at the front and back of the case-body B is free to turn away therefrom, as shown in Fig. 1, the lenses can be readily removed from the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pocket-case for Opticians" lenses, &c., comprising a rigid case-body B having vertical grooves b to receive the lenses and having raised end portions b extending above the tops of said grooves in combination with a flexible cover-strip O arranged to extend around the four sides of said case-body, said cover-strip being permanently fixed to the bottom of the case-body and closing the compartments for the lenses but being disconnected from the case-body at the front and back sides thereof so as to swing away there from, that part of the cover-strip O that extends around the back of the case-body being provided with a holder E, and that part of the cover-strip that extends over the top of the case-body beingprovided with a pocket D of such width as to rest upon the raised end portions 12 of the case-body and the ends of said cover-strip being provided with suitable fastening devices, substantially as described.
FRED H. SMITH.
