LUDWIG B. SOHAEFER AND HENRY HENNINGS, OF BALTIMORE, MD.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOLAR S COMPANIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,399, dated May 13, 1879 application filed March 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LUDWIG B. SCHAEFER and HENRY HENNINGS, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Scholars Companion and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view from the front, with the doors open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the rear.
The object of our invention is to provide for school-children a convenient means for carrying their school-books, pencils, pencil-sharpener, pens, sponge, slate, rag, erasers, penwiper, &c.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a receptacle for transporting and keeping in place the various small arlicles, and in the combination therewith of two cross-straps for securing the books, and a loop for transporting the same upon the 'arm, as hereinafter more fully described.
sustained in upright position, to a shallow upper portion. In the bottom portion of thereceptacle are formed two compartments, a a, one of which is adapted to receive the slate-rag, and the other of which receives the sponge. Just above these compartments (4 a the front of the case is closed in by two hinged doors, b 1), meeting in the middle, and adapted to be fastened by a button, 0, or other equivalent fastening. One of these doors is provided upon its inside surface with a pen-wiper, d, and at its edge where it laps over the other door it is lined witlra strip of fabric or rubber, e, which deadens the noise of closing the box. When these doors are opened the back of the box is exposed, and the shallow character of the upper end permits the ready access of the hand to the pen 'and pencils arranged therein. For securing these articles expansible pockets B B, made of plaited or folded fabric, leather, or rubber cloth, are secured to the back of the box. These pockets are made of difierent lengths, to receive different lengths of pencils, pens, or crayons, and they all extend to the bottom of the box, in the rear of the sponge and rag compartments. To cause them to tightly hold the articles against rattling about in the case, the edges of these pockets are re-enforced by elastic bands of rubber, f,'\vhich are provided with knobshaped buttons j", which are to be used as handles to distend the elastic band to permit the insertion or removal of the articles. Additional elastic bands with similar handles may be arranged upon the sides of the box or above the pockets, as shown, if desirable.
Upon each side of the receptacle is a steel file, g. One has a coarse cutting-surface, for sharpening slate-pencils, and the other a finer cutting-surface, for sharpening lead-pencils.
- For carrying the books, we arrange upon' the back of the box two cross-straps, O C. One of these, 0, is affixed lengthwise to the box by rivets, and has a loop, h, at its upper end, and a buckle, i. The other of these straps, 0, passes through a keeper, j, of the first mentioned strap, at right angles thereto, and has a buckle, k. These two straps, it will be seen, are buckled lengthwise and crosswise around the books, and serve to tightly fasten the books and the receptacle A together, the loop h at the upper end permitting the arm or hand to be inserted, for the purpose of transporting the device.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is- 1. The receptacle or box A, made of tapering form longitudinally, of least depth at the top, and provided with doors I) I), compart- ,ments a a, and expansible pockets B B, sub
stantially as and for the purpose described.
2'. 111 a scholars companion, the plaited or folded pockets B, having a marginal elastic band provided with buttons or handles, as and for the purpose described. 3. The combination, with the receptacle A, of the strap 0, secured to said receptacle, and having loop h, and the strap 0, arranged at right angles to the first, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 22d day of March, 1879.
LUDWIG B. SGHAEFER. HENRY .HENNINGS.
