Be it known that l, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pad-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, .and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming'. a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a combination desk calendar and pad, and its object is vto providel a simple andnovel device of this character, which may be utilized for a number of purposes, such as to furnish a calendar, paper weight, paper clip, or other convenient and useful device.

The present'invention consists primarily in a novel device of the character described, to be hereinafter set forth, and furthermore, this invention consists in the various novel arrangements and combination of parts, all of which will be described in detail in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan'view of my improved device, with the stamp compartment in an open position.

Fig. 2 represents a central section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction indicated by thel arrows, the calendar compartment, shown in dotted lines, swung over the pad, and the hinged lid or cover of the calendar compartment, shown in dotted lines, in open position.

Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of the calendar compartment taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 6, and-looking in the direction indicated by 'the arrows.

Fig.4 represents a similar view'taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 6, andlooking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Similar numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.

In the drawings, 1 designates the back plate of the device, preferably made of metal or any other suitable material,provided near its upper edge with an aperture 2, by means of which theV devicevcan be hung upon a nail or the like, if desired. Arranged near the longitudinal edges of the back plate, and near the top edge thereof, are two alined vslots 3, to receive the upturned apertured ears 4, extending upwardly from theends of the curved body portionY of the bracket 5. Each ear 4 adjacent to the curved body portion of the bracket 5, is provided with a recess 6 at one side, and with an enlarged portion 7 on the curved side, whereby said bracket 5 is secured tothe back plate 1 without any additional fastening means, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

S represents a spring actuated jaw, which is provided with a pair of apertured ears 9, which overlap and are mounted upon and pivotally secured to the apertured ears4 of the brackets 5, said jaw 8 being normally held closed under tension by the'spring 10 coiled around a tube 11, which is interposed between the ears 4 and held in position by means of pivot pins 12 which enter the interior of the tube 11, the `heads of which bear against the apertured ears 9.

The front portion 13 of the jaw 8, which extends beyond the apertured ears 9, terminates preferably in a curved portion, which engages with the pad of paper or with the back plate 1 when the pad is removed.

A calendar compartment, comprising a back plate 14 and a hinged lid orcover 15, the lower half of which is preferably provided with anembossed portion to be utilized for advertising purposes, and the upper half of which is provided with a cutout portion to expose the calendar, picture or the like, is secured to the back plate 14,

near the rear edge thereof, in the following manner:

The lid or cover 15 is provided with a downwardly extendingiange 16, that portion of the flange' at the top edge of the lid or cover being curled inwardly to form aV tubular bearing 17, for the reception of the wire rod or pintle 18. The ends of the pintle 18 are bent downwardly and passed through suitable apertures formed in the lugs 19, on

the back plate 11i, and are then clenched upon the underside of said back plate. A linger-piece 31 pierced from the lid or cover 15 is located near the lower edge of the lid, thereby )roviding means tor releasing the lid from locking engagement withy the lug 20, said lug being provided with a pressedout portion 21, which has locking Vengagement with the flange or' the lid or cover adjacent to the ringer piece 31.

Located within the compartment are a series of calendar cards 22, or there may be a picture or the like. The calendar cards 22 are the day cards, and the cards 32 represent the month cards. rlhe day cards as clearly indicated in Fig. l of the drawings, are shorter than the month cards, in order to expose the name of the month. 33 represents a thin sheet of transparent material, such as celluloid or the like. The marginal flanges 23 extending alongthe edges of the back plate 1a, provide means for positioning and guiding the Banged cover or lid 15 on the back plate 14. The back plate 1a at its lower edge, is provided with a tubular bearing 24, formed by curling the metal of said back plate rearwardly for the reception of the wire rod or pintle 25, by means of which the compartment is pivotally secured to the jaw 8 in the following manner: rIhe jaw 8 is provided with a rearwardly depressed portion 2G, at the end or' which apertures are 'toi-med, and in this rearwardly depressed portion the tubular bearing 2% is located and theV ends of the wire rod or pintle 25 pass through the apertures 27, and engage with outwardly pressed portions 28, which are in alinement with the rearwardly pressed portions 26, and project outwardly from the bracket S, and which form bearings for the pintle, see Fig. 1 or the drawings. A lug 29 is forced rearwardly from the back plate 1l, said lug being provided with a pressed-out portion 30, designed to have locking engagement with the upper edge of the jaw 8, when the compartment is'to beheld in the position shown .in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawings.V Y'

All of the parts of thisV device are preferably made from sheet metal, and are of such shape as to lend themselves readily to manufacture by the use of suitable punches and to the exact details oi" construction, combination and arrangement herein set forth, it being obvious that minor variations thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein described and claimed, not involving invention, I consider as within the scope and terms of my claims.

Having described my invention, what I desire to claim and have protected by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described, comprising a back plate, a spring-actuated jaw pivotally connected to one end of said back plate, and a compartment adapted to hold a card or the like carried by said jaw.

A device of the character described, comprising a back plate, a bracket provided With apertured ears removably secured to said back plate, a jaw provided with apertured ears pivotally connected to said bracket, a spring` coiled around the pivotI to normally hold said jaw closed under tension, a compartment pvotally connected to said jaw adapted to hold a card or the like, and a second compartment adapted to hold stamps or the like secured to the rear of the first-named compartment.
