June 7, 1966 T. TUFAN ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING PENCIL SHARPENER Filed April 25. 1964 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. 751/622 7Z1 an ATTURNE 5.
United States Patent 3,254,630 ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING PENCIL SHARPENER Talat Tufan, Brooklyn, N.Y., assignor to Zottos L. Papanidis, New York, N.Y.
Filed Apr. 23, 1964, Ser. No. 361,959 6 Claims. (Cl. 120-89) This invention relates generally to pencil sharpeners and more particularly to a combined pencil sharpener or pointer and refuse receptacle, especially designed to be used by draftsmen, architects, engineers and artists.
Ordinary pencil sharpeners or pointers when used freely liberate graphite dust which is variously scattered on the table, desk, floor, wastebasket, etc., causing soiling and smudging of everything it contacts, including the hands of the user.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a pencil sharpener or pointer of the enclosed character which is so shaped and so light in weight to permit it to be placed on top of a supporting surface convenient to an individual user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pencil sharpener or pointer of the character described which is capable of serving as a receptacle for pencil refuse and is provided with a trap chamber so as to retain the refuse in case it is accidentally turned upside down or upset.
A further object is to provide a pencil sharpener or pointer of this character that can be readily emptied and cleaned.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a pencil sharpener or pointer of this character that is simple and rugged in construction and is economical to manufacture.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a top perspective view of a pencil sharpener and refuse receptacle embodying one form of the invention, the cover being shown removed and a pencil being shown preparatory to being sharpened.
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1, with the cover in closed position.
FIG. 3 is an exploded perspective view thereof, parts of the container being shown broken away.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view through the longitudinal center thereof, the cover being omitted.
FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 1 of a pencil sharpener and refuse receptacle embodying a modified form of the invention.
FIG. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 .is a view similar to FIG. 2 of the device of FIG. 5, parts being shown broken away.
FIG. 8 is a top perspective view of a pencil sharpener or pointer and refuse receptacle embodying another modified form of the invention, parts being shown detached.
FIG. 9 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 99 of FIG. 8 showing a pencil preparatory to being sharp- Patented June 7, 1966 ICC center thereof. The side and end walls define an open top which is adapted to be closed by a closure plate 22 having a peripheral flange 24. The housing is rectangular in plan and maybe of any desired dimensions, but preferably-is approximately 3%" long, 1%" high, 2%." wide at the bottom and 1%" wide at the top.
In accordance with the invention the sharpening and pointing mechanism is mounted at the top of the housing, interiorly thereof. This mechanism includes a plurality of elongated rectangular-shaped metal plates 26 disposed alongside of each other in slanting relationship and held together against displacement by triangular-shaped bearing'plate membersZS, 28 interlocked to the ends of the plates 26 by means of radial grooves 30 on the inner surfaces of the bearing members coacting with reduced end edges 32 on the plates. Trunnions 34 extend outwardly of cylindrical bases 36 secured to the centers of the hearing members on the outer surfaces thereof by means of adhesive 38 or the like. Knobs or finger pieces 40 are removably mounted on the free ends of the trunnions.
On one side of, each plate 26, the surface thereof is covered with a strip of sandpaper 42 fastened thereon by suitable adhesive, and on the opposite side the surface is covered with a soft flexible strip 44 of felt or the like secured thereto by adhesive. The arrangement of the plates is such that a surface of sandpaper is disposed adjacent to a surface of felt as seen in FIG. 2 so that there is always a sharpening surface and a cleaning surface exposed.
In use, the exposed portion of the lead L of a pencil P is moved back and forth over the sandpaper 42 to sharpen and point the pencil. As the lead is sharpened the particles of lead gravitate into the trough formed by adjacent plates 26. Subsequently, the pencil is moved back and forth over the felt strip 44 so that the loosened particles will be brushed or wiped from the lead. The sharpening and pointing mechanism is then rotated on V the trunnions 34 by means of one of the knobs 40 and the particles of lead and shavings in the trough are dumped into the interior of the housing or casing 12 and collected on the bottom wall 14. The plates 26 are mounted within the housing or casing 12 and extend from end to end thereof and as such trap and retain all refuse deposited in the casing or housing if the casing or housing is upset.
The sharpening and pointing mechanism is removable as a unit by lifting it upwardly carrying the trunnions 34 out of the bearing notches 20. When the mechanism is removed, the casing and housing may be readily cleaned and emptied of the refuse collected.
The modified form of combined pencil sharpener or pointer and refuse receptacle 10' shown in FIGS. 5 to 7, inclusive, differs from the device 10 in that the triangular-shaped bearing members 28 are held together by means of an elongated round shaft 50 extending through central holes 52 therein and protruding outwardly thereof. The protruding ends 54 of the shaft are journalled in U-shaped bearing members 56 formed on the inner surface of the end walls 18' at the top center thereof.
pointer and refuse receptacle 10' is similar to device 10 r and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts throughout.
Referring now to the modified form of pencil sharpener or pointer and refuse receptacle 10 shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, this modification differs from device 10'- in that the bottom wall 14" is formed separately with walls 16" and 18",
an upstanding flange 60 therearound. The side and end respectively, are formed integrally with each other and are supported on the bottom wall outwardly of the flange 60, the flange serving as a guide in positioning the same. In this form, the side walls 16 terminate short of the top of the end walls 18".
A pair of downwardly slanting top walls 62, 62 are formed integrally with the top edge of the side walls 16". The top walls extend downwardly and inwardly into the interior of the casing to a point approximately the midheight of the casing, the free ends of said slanting top walls being closely spaced from each other, providing a clearance 64 for the particles of'lead and shavings to fall by gravity into the interior of the casing onto the bottom wall 14". The upper or outer surfaces of the slanting walls are recessed for their length as indicated at 66 and covering the recesses are strips of sandpaper or files 68 removably secured in place by adhesive 70.
In this form, the flanged bottom wall 14 serves as a tray for collecting the particles of lead and shavings and when it is desired to clean and empty the tray, the side, end and top walls are lifted as a unit off of the bottom wall.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:
