Description

0. W. BLAKE.
GUM BOX.
APPLICATION IILED JULY 20, 1908.
Patented Sept. 6,1910.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ONESIMUS W. BLAKE, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
GUM-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ONESIMUS WV. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gum-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved receptacle especially adapted for use as a gum box or holder.
My improved device is provided with two compartments, one for holding the sticks of gum before chewing, and the other for the quid of gum after it has been chewed. The box is provided at each end with a hinged cover, one of which incloses a large receptacle for the sticks of gum, while the other incloses a smaller receptacle for the quid.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gum box. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing one of the covers open. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the opposite cover open, the position of the box being reversed from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken through the box, which is in the position illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section taken at right angles to Fig. 4, being a section taken on the line 5-5, Fig. 4.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the box in its entirety. The body 6 of the box is provided at each extremity with a band 7, which projects slightly outwardly beyond the body of the box, as shown at 8. The bands 7 are employed to reinforce the opposite extremities of the box. Hinged to the opposite extremities of the box, as shown at 9 and 10, are two covers 12 and 13. Each cover is provided with a small plate 14. These Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 20, 1908.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910. Serial No. 444,546.
plates, when the covers are closed, project inwardly into the opposite extremities of the body of the box, occupying positions between the extremities of a leaf spring and the outer wall of the box. This spring is secured to the wall of the box by rivets 16. lVhen either cover is open, its plate 14 acts to force the adjacent spring extremity 15 inwardly thus placing the spring under tension, whereby the cover is automatically retained in the open position. When the cover is closed, the spring also acts on the plate 14 with sufiicient force to normally retain the cover in the closed position.
At one extremity of the box, being that where the cover 14 is located, the box is provided with a partition 17, which is preferably downwardly curved, (see Figs. 3 and 4). This downward curvature forms a shallow receptacle at one end of the body of the box, adapted to receive the quid 18 of gum. The cover 13 when closed cooperates with the receptacle formed by the partition 17 making ample room for a quid of gum.
The main compartment 19 of the box, forms a receptacle for the sticks 20 of gum.
My improved device is particularly adapted for use as a gum box, the intention being to carry the same in the pocket. As heretofore intimated, it is adapted for use not only to hold a supply of sticks of unchewed gum, but also for holding the quid after chewing. It is evident, however, that the box may be used for other or similar purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A box or receptacle of the class described, comprising a body portion separated by a permanent concave partition into two compartments, the said partition formed of the body portion at one end of the said receptacle, a leaf spring centrally secured to the wall of the box, and covers for closing the two compartments, the said covers provided with plates engaging the free extremities of either end of the spring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
