T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM GEORGE HENRY Cook, a citizen of Canada, residing at Lethbridge, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, has invented new and useful Improvements in Cardcases, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient case for carrying playing cards under conditions serving to prevent the soiling or marring of the-cards and particularly the bending or breaking down of the edges of the cards when carried in the pocket or where exposed to contact with adjacent objects as in a valise and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of a card case embodying the invention shown in the open or interiorly exposed. position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same.
The case consists essentially of a box or body portion 10 upon which is mounted a lid or cover 11 through the medium of a hinge 12, the free edge of the lid or cover being provided with a snap fastener 13 or its equivalent for holding the case closed. The box and lid members of the case are preferably provided at their edges wit-h inwardly directed flanges 14: and 15 which lie in contact when the case is closed and which not only exclude dust but serve as a means of solidifying the structure by affording fiat bearing surfaces which thus relieve the -hinge of strain due to contact of the exterior of the case with adjacent objects.
Carried by the box member of the case is a yielding seat 16 supported by a spring 17 which in the construction illustrated is of Serial No. 538,940.
the volute form whereby the seat consisting of a plate of a size approximating that of a playing card, is held parallel with and in yielding relation to the bottom of the box. Carried by the lid or cover in opposed relation with the yielding seat 16 is a bearing element 18 consisting of a spherically concaved disk attached at its center to the lid having its projecting annular edge disposed to bear upon the uppermost card of the pack resting on the seat so that when the lid or cover is closed the pressure of this bearing element upon the uppermost card serves to place the seat supporting spring under tension and thereby yieldingly clamp the pack of cards between the seat and the bear ing element and hold them in place against sliding movement and hence against the possibility of injury to the edges thereof by reason of contact with the walls of the case. It will be noted that the pressure in opposite directions applied to the pack of cards is at their centers or intermediate portions, so that the possibility of distortion, bending or breaking of the cards even though the case may be roughly handled, is reduced to the minimum.
Having described the invention, whatis claimed as new and useful is 1- A playing card case having box and lid members respectively provided interiorly with a yieldingly supported rest and a bearing member arranged in opposed relation for engagement with an interposed pack of cards, the bearing element consisting of a spherically concaved disk having an annular parallel edge for contact with the surface of the uppermost card of the pack.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
WILLIAM GEORGE HENRY COOK.
