To all whom it may concern:

Be it'known that I, JAMEs FrrzsIMMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cardboard Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

One object of my invention is to provide a strong and durable box which may be formed of a single sheet of cardboard with little waste.

A further object is to provide a box having a flanged cover and a novel rear corner construction whereby the end flanges are prevented from springing away from the Another object is to devise an extremely strong front corner construction for both the box proper and its hinged cover.

A still further object is to provide a novel fastening means for the cover.

With the foregoing general objects in view, the invention resides in the novel fea tures of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the cardboard blank from which the box is constructed;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box with its cover open;

Fig. 3 is a similar view of the box in closed position;

Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 44 of Fig. 3; and

Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section on the planes of the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.

Since the construction of the improved box can be better understood by first describing the blank from which it is formed, this course will be followed; and to this end, reference may be had more particularly to Fig. 1. The numeral 1 designates a rectangular bottom having a front side 2, a rear side 3, and two ends 4 formed integrally with its edges. Triangular front flaps 5 are joined integrally to the ends of the front side 2 and are provided with flap extensions 6 extending laterally from the outer edge of said side, the free outer ends of said extenslons having T-shaped tongues 7 adapted for passage through short longitudinal slots 8 in the front portions of the ends 4 as will be hereinafter described. The ends of the rear side 3 are provided with-integral rectangular flaps 9 having T-shaped tongues 10 ontheir outer ends for passage'through short transverse slots 11 in the rear portions of the ends 4:. 7

A rectangular top 12 is integral with the upper'edge of the rear side 3, the front edge ofsaid top having a front flange 18 whi e the ends of said top are provided with end flanges 14. Triangular flaps 15 are formed integrally with the flange 13 and are provided with flap extensions 16 whose free ends are equipped with T-shaped tongues 17 for passage through short longitudinal slots 18 in the front portions of the end flanges 14:. The free outer edges of the flanges 14 are each formed with a substantially V- shaped notch 19, said notches being located near the rear ends of these flanges and serving to clear the tongues 10 when the box is assembled. p

A fastening tongue 20 is integral with the free edge of the front side 2 and cooperates with a pair of central longitudinally disposed slots 21 in the front flange 13. The entire blank above described is stamped from a single rectangular sheet of cardboard and it will be obvious by reference to Fig. 1 that very little waste occurs.

In assembling, or rather in folding the box for use, the

The flaps 5 are folded into contact with the inner sides of the ends 4 and the flap extensions 6 are folded over the upper edges of said ends into contact with the outer sides of the latter, the tongues 7 being passed inwardly through the slots 8. By this arrangement, an extremely strong and durable front corner construction is provided. The end flanges 14 and the front flange 13 of the top 12 are folded into right angular re. lation with said top, and the flaps 15 are folded against the inner sides of said end flanges 14. I claim:

A cardboard box formed of a single blank and comprising a rectangular bottom, ends,

a back and a front bent up from said bottom, a top integral with said back and bent to form ends and a front, both fronts having triangular flaps bent inwardly into contact with theinner sides of said ends, said flaps having edges inclining to the free edges of said ends and the latter having slots spaced from said inclined edges, rectangular extensionson said flaps folded around the free edges of said ends onto the outer sides of thelatter and having T shaped tongues inserted through said slots, rectangular rear flaps on the ends of said back folded onto the outer sides of the adjacent ends and having T shaped tongues, said last named ends having slots through which said tongues are inserted; the lower edges of the ends carried by said top having angular notches forming triangular portions for reception between said rear flaps and the ends bent up from said bottom.
