Description

J. B. KENNY.
BASKET. APPLICATION FILED APR. 30,1908.
Q QQASO.
Patented May 4, 1909.
JOHN B. KENNY, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK. I
BASKET.
To'all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, J OHN B. KENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to baskets, and particularly to that type of basket which is used for the transportation of small fruit, such. as gra es, eaches, ears, etc.
e 0 ect of t e mventlon 1s to rovlde a device of this character which will e cheap tomanufacture and which will be strong and durable, being reinforced at points where the greatest strain is thrown u on the basket in transportation. These bas ets have heretofore been shipped in considerable quantities in freight cars, but it was found out that they cannot stand the strain, and that it was necessary to crate them. This, of course, is expensive, necessitating additional labor, time,'etc. on the cost of materials used and wasted.
It is the object of myinvention to so reinforce the basket that it will withstand the hard treatment received when shipping without being crated.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the acccm anyin drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view 0 the b ank used, Fig. 2is a perspective view of the basket with one end wmpletely folded and the opposite end partially folded.
In order to make the basket hown in Fig.- 1 of the drawings I take a bla k sheet 1, of heavy paper-board and. cut it on the lines 2, 3, 4 and 5, in order toform the bottom piece 6, the side pieces 7 and end pieces 8. The end pieces are folded upon the lines 9 to form reinforcing flaps 16, and the side pieces 'iny hand in presence of two subscribing witare folded upon the line 11, so as to extend at approximatel right anglesto the bottom piece 6. In folr ing'the basket into position the flaps 10 are thrown over so as to. l each other upon the end piece 8, and are folded upon the 1ine'12, so as to extend at right angles to the Bottom. The pointed ends of v Specification o1 Letters Patent. Application filed April 30, 1908'. Serial No. 430,186.
the sides 13, are folded over each other and the parts riveted together as shown in Fig. 2. These'end'pieces 8 and the ends of the sides 13 may be riveted, glued or eyeleted together,
as may be deemed most desirable, or all three'maybev employed; In order to reinforce the sides at a point, where the eyelet for the handle goes through I preferably secure a V-shaped reinforcing strip 14, which is apertured to receive the eyelet 15, through which the handle 16, passes.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. Various changes in the form, proportion ,and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing. from the principle or sacrificing an of the advantages of this invention as de ned in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A basket constructed of a single sheet of material and comprising bottom, side and end members, extension pieces on,the side .members, extension (pieces on the end members ada ted to fol over each other, said end mem ers being folded' over the extension members on the side pieces so as to reinforce the end, and a V-shaped handle reinforcing strip secured to each side member.
2. A basket constructed of a single sheet of material and comprising bottom, side and and members, extension pieces on the slde Patented May 4, 1909. I
members adapted to overlap each other,
extension pieces on the end members adapted to be doubled back upon themselves, said end members and their extensions bein folded over the extension members of sai side pieces so as to reinforce the same, means for securing the end members and the extensions of the side members together, a rein-- forcing strip carried by the side members and a hollow'rivet passing through the same for the reception of the handle bail.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set nesses.
JOHN B. KENNY.
