UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH REGKENDORFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171, 860, dated January 4, 1876.; application filed December 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH REGKENDOR- 'the quality of the goods contained therein.
1 have devised a box which retains all the advantages, and at the same time obviates the disadvantages, of the closed box.
The nature of my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into eftect, can best be explained and understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pencil-receptacle, and Fig. 3 is a like view of the outer case, of which two parts the box is composeth The receptacle A is of the proper dimensions to receive a given number of lead-penoils-say one dozen. It is of trough-likeform, closed at the bottom, ends, and sides, and open at the top. The outer case B is of a size to receive and encompass snugly the pencil-' receptacle. It is closed on the bottom and sides, and open at the ends. [ts top is also open, save at points adjoining the two ends, where the sides are held together by crossstrips a a. 1
The pencil-receptacle, filled with its quantum of pencils, is inserted endwise into the outer case. When in place the pencils, although held down at the ends by the strips a a, are exposed for the greater. part of their length, so that the purchaser can readily ingrades and numbers of the pencils. and any other information that it is desirable to'impart to the user. Instructions may also be printed on the body of the outer case.
It will be noted that by .reversing the position of the pencil-receptacle with respect to the outer casethat is to say, by turning either of the two bottoms upward before putting the one part to the other-the box can be made a closed box, and the closed bottom of the pencil-receptacle will be exhibited through the open top of the outer case. On the bot tom of the pencil-receptacle I propose placing a calendar, which will thus be in position to be available to the user.
What I claim as my invention is The pencil-box consisting of an outer case, having an open top, with cross-strips to hold together the sides, as described and an inner pencil-receptacle, with or without openings in one or both ends thereof, said parts being constructed and arranged together substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereot'I have hereunto signed my name this 4th day of December, A. D. 1875.
JOS. REGKENDORFER.
