DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 2119i?.
Application led July 6, 1914. Serial No. 849,183.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LALFRED BURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improved device for displaying articles of merchandise, and it is designed especially for holding and displaying hair pins.
Celluloid, bone, shell or similar hair pins are usually mounted for sale on display cards, or are packedfin boxes containing several pins and havingv one of them displayed on the front thereof. rlhe devices heretofore used in vending hair pins have not been` designed to securely hold the displayed pins in place, and it has been found that many of the pins are ,lost or damaged in the handling which they receive during inspection and sale.
The principal objectV of my invention is to provide a display device having novel means for securely holding a hair pin in place thereon and which is constructed so that the displayed pin` cannot be accidentally dislodged in handling the device.
I attain the .object Aspecified as well as others not herein enumerated by means of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a front view of one form of display device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a view of device made in the form of a box blank, Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the folded bo; blank, and, Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section thereof, when closed.
My improved device consists of a body portion made of card board or other suitable material having means formed thereon for engaging the head and the points of `a hair pin. It is constructed so as to secui'ely hold and lock the hair pin in place when it is mounted thereon.
Referring to lthe drawings, 1 represents the body portion of the device consisting preferably of a piece of card board cut in any convenient or desired shape and' size. In said body are formed two slits, indicated byreference characters 2 and 3,.leaving an integral vertical bar or strip 4 of the maa modification of the terial separating them, which strip serves as a retaining member for holding and securing the curved head of the pin 5. flhe ends of the slits 2 and 3 are preferably curved outwardly, as shown, to strengthen the connection between the strip 4 and the body.
Two horizontal bars or strips 6, formed integral with the body portion, are located in position to engage the legs of the pin 5. These strips are made by forming cuts 7 in the material directly above and below the place where it is desired to locate the strips.
Extending laterally of the strip 4 are the slits 8, 8, which terminateat points located a greater distance apart than the maximum width of the pin so as to form a divided pin-receiving opening of a total length sufcient to permit the pin 5 to be freely passed therethrough. In mounting the pin it is inserted from the back of the .body 1, through the opening formed by ysaid slits, into position shown in Fig. 1 with the legs of the pin caught in the strips 6 and the head thereof engaged by the strip 4. After the pin has been inserted through the slits S, the portions of the card board body surrounding the opening will spring back to their normal position so asto securely hold the head of the pin in place between said body and the strip 4.
In Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings lf have vice in which the body portion 1 is made in the form of ya box blank. With this form lof my invention l am able to securely hold and display one of the pins on the front thereof', in the manner `heretofore described, and then to fold the parts of the blank so as to form a package or box in which a plurality of the pins `may be conveniently packed. ln the modified form, the body 1 is extended along its sides and also at its top and bottom so as to provide sufficient stock t0 permit of its being folded into box like shape after the displayed pin has been secured to the front thereof. To this end the side extensions are creased along vertical lines 9, 10, 11 and 12 and are then folded inwardly to form the walls and central partition of the boxlike package shown in Figs. 3 and 4. rlhe portion a of the blank lying between the pair of creases 9'forms the front wall of the box; the portions b between the creases 9 and 10 the side walls; the portions c between the creases 10 and 11 each of which is approximately one half the width of the front portion a, together form the rear wall; the portions l between the creases l1 and 12 form the central partition; and the end portions e, form flanges which are adapted to abut against the front Wall of the box when in folded position and serve to hold the partition d in place. 'Ihe top andbottom extension of the body portion l, are each out to form two side flaps f which are adapted to be folded inwardly in overlapped relation so as to close the open ends of the box, and a cover Hap g having a bifurcated extension which is adapted to. be folded down upon the flaps f to close the box and to hold the folded parts thereof together. The extended portion of the cover g ts into the space between the rear edges of the flaps f and the rear wall e of the box so that the divided parts thereof will exert a clamping action on the opposite sides of the partition d and thereby hold the folded box together without necessity of gluing or pasting any of its parts. When the pins are packed in the box they are supported by and iide upon the partition d as best seen in In the foregoing specification I have described what I believe to be the best mode of applying my invention, but it will be understood that the construction and arrangement of the various parts may be modified from that illustrated in the accompanying drawings without departing from the scope of my invention.
LEISA@ What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A display device for hair pins comprising a blank provided with a pair of slits forming a holder between them for the head of a pin, slits pair of slits and terminating at points located a greater distance apart than the maximum width of the pin, and holders for the legs of the pin, said lateral slits forming a divided opening through which the pin is passed into engagement with the holders in mounting it on the blank.
`2. A display device for hair pins comprising a card provided at its upper portion with a pair of longitudinal slits having outturned ends and forming between them a vertical strip for engaging and holding the head of a hair pin, slits extending laterally of the longitudinal slits and forming a divided pin-receiving opening of greater length than the width of the pin whereby the pin may be mounted on the card by being passed from the rear through said opening, and pairs of transverse slits having outturned ends at the lower portion of the card and forming between them horizontal strips for engaging and holding the legs of the pin.
