LADYSWORK-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,138, dated February 16, 1892.
' Application filed October '7, 1891. ScrialNo. 408,061. (No model.)
Y land, have invented a neT and useful Improvenient in Ladies iVork-BoXes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a ladys WorkboX or portable sewing-cabinet composed of a series of folding panels inclosing a central chamber or box-like compartment and being in the form, when closed, of a'satchel or reticule, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The article may be made in leather, material in imitation of leather, plush, silk, or any other suitable material or materials, and forms a cheap, neat, or ornamental and very convenient portable cabinet for use by ladies Y1n doing-fancy and domestic needle-Work and serving to contain in an orderly and readilyaccessible manner the various implements or 'articles used in doing such Work, such as sewing-needles, knitting-needles,crochetneedies, scissors, and other like articles.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a View in perspective of the Work-box closed; Fig. 2,V a like View of the saine open, and Fig. 3 a vertical longitudinal section of it open.
A, B, C, and D represent a series of panels, the one B of which llas turned-up ends b and serves to carry or hold Within it a bodychamber or box-like compartment E. The panel A, which is provided with closing-in end flaps a a., folds or shuts, when the article is closed, against the one side of the compartment E or edges of the turned-up ends b of the panel B, inclosing said receptacle or compartment, while the panel C folds or, closes up against the opposite side of the receptacle or opposite edges of the turned-up ends b, and the panel D folds or closes over the open top of said receptacle or compartment E and engages by an outer ilap d and catch or fastening g with the closed panel A.
contain or hold on their inner faces in an orderly or separate manner, by, means of loops or pockets, the various tools or articles used in needle-workhas, for instancethe vpanel A, a series of knitting-needles h, covered and protected at their ends from slipping out by the flaps a a,- the panel C, a yilat sewingneedle case k, and the panel D, Which is preferably padded, a crochet-needle, scissors, and other articles used in doing fancyor domestic needlework- While the compartment E may be used to contain the work to be done and spools or other packages holding the silk, thread, Worsted, or other stitching material to be used in the work.` All these several panels and the compartment E and the articles in or on them are fully exposed to View, ready for use when the panels are unfolded or thrown open,.as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. y
This is readily and quickly done, and by folding said panels, as described, the work-box or sewing-cabinet is just as readily closed into Satchel or reticule form,as shown in Fig. l, and when fastened may be conveniently carried by a handle Z on the back ofthe panel D, for instance.
It Will be seen that the sides of the box F. are Within the plane of the ends b b, and thereby arecess is lformed at each side of the box for receiving the needles and the like carried by the panelsA C, when the latter are folded againstand contact with the projecting ends of the end pieces b l).
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a ladys Work-box or sewing-cabinet, y the combination, with an open-top box-like structure the ends of which extend beyond the sides to form a recess at each side of said The several panels AC, and D serve to.
