UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN SKELTON PIN CIIIN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
PAINT DRUM, KEG, TIN, abo.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,406, dated January 10, 1899. Application led Tune 6,1898. Serial No. 682,668. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN SKELTON PIN- oHIN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Vogelnest, Compayne Gardens, West Hampstead, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint Drums, Kegs, Tins, and the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to paint kegs or drums, tins, and the like; and the object thereof is to enable such kegs, drums, tins, and the like to be used as paint-pots or when emptied of their original contents to be used as buckets or other receptacles by providing them with handles or bails secured thereto in such a manner as not to interfere with the packing of the said kegs, drums, or tins for shipment, transport, or storage; and in order that my said invention may be fully understood I will proceed to explain the same with reference tothe accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure l represents a keg, drum, or tin constructed according to this invention filled and ready for packing. Fig. 2 shows same keg, drum, or tin `withcover or lid removed and ready for use as a paint pot or bucket. Fig. 3 shows handle detached from keg, drum, or tin. Fig. 4 is a section of keg, drum, or tin.
The same letters denote the same parts in all the figures.
CL is a keg, drum, or the like, preferably.
formed of sheet metal, having studs b b, secured in any suitable manner to the sides thereof.
c is a lid or cover which is made to fit the top of the keg, drum, or the like and is secured therein by clips d, which are secured to the body of the keg, drum, or the like and turned over the top of the tin and the edge of the lid, as shown at Fig. 1, or the lid may be tted to and secured in the keg, drum, or the like in any other suitable way.
f is a strip of metal or other suitable material secured to the lid c to enable the said lid to be removed from the keg, drum, or the like, and also to enable the said receptacle to be easily lifted and carried when ready for packing or transport, thev said strip being bent so as to form two loops g g, as shown at Fig. l.
, 7L is a bail or handle formed of a strip of metal or other suitable material bent or otherwise for-med to fit closely to the sidesand top of the keg, drum, or the like when ready for packing 'oi'.transport. Toprevent damage to the bail during transport or storage and also to give a good grip, I secure a strip of wood or other suitable material 7a to the handle 7L, which when the handle is in the position shown by Figs. l and 4 rests on the upper surface of the lid c and prevents the handle from being bent downward accidentally. The strip his long enough to reach slightly below the bottom of the keg, drum, or the like when in the position shown by Fig. l, and the ends h" h thereof are turned up under the bottom of the keg, drum, or the like and prevent the handle from becoming displaced. (See Fig. 4.) Slots Z Z are formed inthe strip 71 as shown, which slots receive the studs b b, thus enabling the handle to be placed, as shown by Fig. l, for packing, transport, and storage purposes, or to assume the position shown by Fig. 2 when the keg, drum, or the like is in use. When the keg, drum, or the like is ready for packing, the portion 7L rests on the top thereof and the piece 7c rests on the lid c between the loops g g.
To open the keg, drum, or the like, the
. lower portion h" of the strip h maybe cut off or the ends thereof, which are under the bot torn, merely straightened, the handle raised `into the position shown by Fig. 2, and, if desired, turned on one side. The clips d CZ are then straightened and the lid c removed by means of the loops g g. i
When open, the keg, drum,or the like, if it contains paint, maybe used as apaint-pot.
When empty, the keg, drum, or the like may be used as a pail, bucket, or other receptacle for containing liquid or solid substances.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In paint drums, kegs, tins, and the like the sliding bail 7L formed of L single piece of the like substantiallyas specified :md fol-the metal having slots Z Z therein which engage purpose stated.
with studs b b secured to the bodies of the y T i y n 1 said dru1n,keg,tin, and the like, the ends 71," EDXVD SBEL I ON PINK/IHN 5 of the bail being prolonged beyond the bot- Witnesses:
