CLOSURE MEMBER FOR CONTAINERS Filed April 1, 195o .L40 /A/VEA/T L MURRAY C;

A T TOQNEY Patented Jan. 6, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOSURE MEMBER FOR CONTAINERS Murray Gerin, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application April 1, 1950, Serial No. 153,341
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in containers, particularly the closure member for said containers.
It is an object of my invention to provide a closure member which is simple in construction, efdcient in operation and economical in manufacture.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a Slideable valve of a novel construction and arrangement, whereby said valve operates about a cooperating port in a bilateral direction, thus permitting children `and handicapped persons to operate the closure member with ease.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent from the following description embodied in the speciiication taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, partially in section of a closure member embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a side view, partially in section, taken along line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side view, partially in section, taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail a container I is shown capped by a closure member I2.
Closure member I2 embodying my invention includes a base portion I4 formed with a port or opening I6, and a recess having a pair of side members I8 formed with oppositely disposed faces astride said port. Faces 20 are inclined toward one another remote said port.
A Slideable valve member 22 provide with sloping sides 24, adapted to slide between and abutting the oppositely disposed faces 2u is mounted in said recess. The slide member 22 is further formed with reversely positioned guide and stop channels 26a extending parallel to faces 24 along a substantial portion of .the sliding valve member.
Evaporation, spilling or otherwise extruding the contents of the container is prevented by use of a tight t between the slide member and the base member. The seal is maintained when the slide covers the port. The contents may be discharged by movement of the Slideable valve member 22 from a neutral or center position either of two directions opening the port.
The blind and otherwise handicapped will und 2 it simple to utilize my closure member as it may be moved in either of two opposite directions thus illuminating the necessity of twisting and turning the container until the proper direction is selected.
In the event it is desirable to use my closure member for products such as tooth paste or other types of paste, the Slideable valve member 22 may be utilized to cut off the paste when the desired quantity has been extruded.
My closure member is readily adaptable J00 be fabricated as an integral part of a plastic or metal container, thus discarding the present practice of using one cap to deliver capped containers to a consumer, and an auxiliary cap for the period of use of the container.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to point out that the specific construction described is illustrative, and that I desire the claim be read within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A closure member for containers including a base member, a port in said base member and a pair of stop pins extending upwardly from said base member, a pair of side members astride said port having the faces thereof inclined toward one another remote said port, and a valve member having reversely positioned guide channels extending parallel to said side members along a substantial portion of the valve member each of said guide channels including an open end and a closed end, said closed ends being oppositely disposed, so that when the valve member is moved in one direction, one of said stop pins is stopped by the closed end of one of said channels, and the other of said stop pins upon movement in the opposite direction, is stopped by the closed end of the other of said channels.
