EASY OPEN AND CLOSE JAR LID Filed Feb. 9, 1959 FIG.
Fm. 3 /2a INVENTOR.
GRACE L. SHORT EASY OPEN CLOSE JAR LID Grace L. Short, 1010 Harvard Road, Oakland 10, Calif.
Filed Feb. 9, 1959, Ser. No. 791,886
1 Claim. (Cl. 215-63) This invention relates to containers and more particularly to an easily operated lid therefor.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a convenient lid for shallow jars, such as cosmetic jars, which will enable such jars to be easily opened and closed during use with wet or slippery hands.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a closure lid for shallow cosmetic jars which will enable such jars to betightly sealed when in a closed position and which will prevent unnecessary waste or loss of the contents of such jar.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a jar lid bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, with parts broken away, of a jar lid assembly made in accordance with the present invention in operative use;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the assembly shown in Figure 1 in a completely closed position;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view of the assembly shown in Figure 2, taken along line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a'bottom plan view of the assembly shown in Figure 2.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a jar lid assembly made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main wall '18 having a central circular opening extending therethrou-gh which is defined by a substantially inverted truncated conical surface 20 which extends through and communicates with the upper and lower sides thereof. An annular collar 12 integral with and depending from the lower side of the main wall 18 is provided with internal threads 14 that threadedly engage with a correspondingly threaded neck 16 of any shallow type jar. A hinge pin 26 eX- tending through hinge portions 24 of a pair of lid sections 22 pivotally supports such lid sections 22 upon the opposite upper side of the main wall 18 for selective movement relative thereto between a normally closed and open position.
As is more clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, each lid section 22 is provided With a segmental circular peripheral surface 23 that corresponds in inclination to the surface 20 of the opening through the main wall 18, thus providing a tight sealing fit in the closed position.
Patented Aug. 30, 1960 2 A radially outwardly extending marginal portion, including hand holds 28, limits the downward movement of the lid sections 22 toward the closed position and also provides convenient means for raising and lowering the lid sections during use.
It will now be recognized that this device, which can be preferably constructed of molded plastic material, may be readily attached to all types of shallow cosmetic jars. In the normally closed position, the contents of the jar are conveniently sealed against evaporation and waste, while it only requires a flick of the finger to open such jars for use by exerting an upward movement against the finger grips 28, in the manner shown in Figure 1. If desired, this lid assembly may be conveniently used to replace conventional types of lids, and may be economically reused with similar jars so as to prolong the normal useful life thereof.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A jar lid comprising, in combination, a main substantially fiat wall of annular shape, said main wall including a substantially inverted truncated inwardly and downwardly converging continuous conical edge surface defining a central substantially circular opening in said main wall providing access therethrough from an upper outer side thereof to a lower inner side thereof, substantially circular coupling means carried by the lower inner side of said main wall radially outwardly of said central opening in downwardly directed relation to said main wall and comprising an internally threaded collar integral with said main wall for threaded attachment to an exteriorly threaded neck of a jar, and closure means carried by the upper outer side of said main wall for controlling communication through said opening and comprising a pair of substantially similar send-circular lid sections and a hinge pin pivotally centrally connecting said lid sections together for individual pivotal movement between open and closed positions relative to said main wall opening, marginal portions of each of said semicircular lid sections defining substantially inverted truncated inwardly downwardly converging conical surfaces corresponding to the similar conical surfaces defining said opening and adapted for sealing engagement therewith when said lid sections are in closed relationship with said opening in said main wall, each of said lid sections including radially outwardly extending tabs overlying said main wall and extending beyond the downwardly directed threaded collar for digital engagement for controlling pivotal movement of said lid sections between normally closed and open positions.
