cLosURE Filed June 3o, 1934 we lill Patented (Jan. 1, 1935l v I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE cLosUmt Martha l. Keith, Brookline, Mass. Application June so, 1934, serial No. 133,230 i l 15 claims. (01215-63) My invention relates to closures for jars, bottles, Similar characters of reference indicate similar flasks and like containers of the`type wherein a parts throughout the views. cap or shell, threadedly engageable with the open As shown in the drawing the container is a jar end of the container, has a central orifice closable comprising a body portion 2 and a neck portion 3 5 by a pivoted or hinged lid. provided with the usual external screw thread 4, 5
1n this type of closurethe contents of the coneither continuous or broken. tainer, such for instance as creamand scented The container closure includes a shell or cap 7 compounds, have been exposed' tothe manual drawn up from thin sheet metal, comprising a flat touch and defacement of a potential purchasers top 8, a cylindrical skirt or side 9. and an inwardly 10 finger, when the orifice has been disclosed by directed upturned annular flange 10 upon the '10 opening the lid. Certain objects of the' present bottom of the skirt tightly embracing the lower invention, therefore, are, without removal of the margin of a cylindrical metallic lining ring 11 cap, to render the contents visible under such provided with an internal thread 12. Interposed circumstances and protect the latter from manual snugly between the top of the lining ring and the contact, removal or derangement, by a transtop of the cap is a flat sealing ring 14 provided 15 parent member that is inexpensive, secure, and in its upper face with a circular recess 15 and protective of the scent of the contents. 'composed preferably of parailin paper.
Heretofore the skirt portion of the cap has been The top of the jar. neck portion 3 is at and rendered unsightly by the resultant external terminates at apoint below the ring 14, affording zo shoulder or shoulders occasioned by the formaan annular space 16 for the reception of a de- 20 tion of the internal continuous or broken attachtachable flexible guard member 17, shown in deing thread, and an object of the present invention tail in Figure 4, comprising an annular frame 18, is to inexpensively prevent this result. preferably of cardboard, whose opening is closed Additional objects are to provide means for by a circular sheet 19 of cellophane or other transscraping away such contents as may accidentally parent material pasted at its peripheral margin to accumulate at points adjacent the orice of the ,the top of the frame., cap; to so thoroughly seal at all times and under -Y 1n .acentral `opening 20 in the top 8`of the cap all circumstances both the cap and the cove'l` as isiixed an attaching rim 22 comprising an anto prevent the evaporation or odoral escapev of -nular body 23 provided with horizontal margia0 the container contents; to provide means within nal clamping flanges 24 and 25 adapted to em- 30 the lid for an advertising display when the lid is bracingly engage the top and bottom of the capV elevated, and to attain all the above enumerated top respectively. The flange 25 is seated in the objects in an inexpensive, and secure structure. recess 15 of the' ring 14. Integral with the outer With the above and other objects and advanperiphery ofthe flange 24 is a vertical annular l $5 tageous features in view, the invention consists lip 26,provided with asegmentalrecess 2'i, at each 35 of an arrangement of .parts more fully disclosed side of which hinge sleeves 28 are integralwlith in the detailed description following, in conjuncor soldered to the lip and embrace a pintleg29, asA tion with the accompanying drawing, and more shown in Figure 6. l Y. a Specmcany defined in the claims appended there-, A circular 11d 31 comprises a convex central to. `:Dandy gortion and alfllat annutlrr nllarginftlrpor-1 4 lon provi e wl an ln ne per p era oftnmtsrlgmg drawmg forming a' part ange 34 embracing the peripheral margin of Figures 1 and 2 are a side elevation and a top im amflarattachg. lugtprtllgrs otadrpend'f lan view respectively of acontalner engaged with mg gul e ange mse o .e per p ery o p the hd and adapted, when the l d ls depressed, to

Figures 4 and 5, detail perspective views 0f the A flet sealing ring as ls frletlonelly retained '5o transparent member and the lower seallng ring by and betweenthe guide ange 31 and the edge 50 respectively; Y of the peripheral flange s4 of the lld, assists to Figure 6, a fragmentary perspectlve vlew 0f the prevent the access of air to the jar contents when lid attaching rim, and Y the lid is closed.
y Figure 7, a fragmentary section on line '7--7 of A display disk 39 of cardboard or other suitable I Figure 2, material, preferably laminated with cellophane 56 2 to protect printed advertising matter, has its edge frictionally engaging the ange 37 and is pressed against the marginal portion 32 of the lid by a bezel or ring 41 frictionally engaging the ilange 37.
A hinge sleeve 43 integral with or iixed to the periphery of the lid 31 embraces the hinge pin 29 between the sleeves 28. A thumb nail projection 45 upon the lid diametrically opposite the sleeve 43 serves to assist the manual elevation of the lid which is normally held in closed position' by a. snap projection 46 upon the ilange37 engaging a notch 47 in the flange 22. I
In use the container may be filled iiush with the top of the neck portion 3, and the detachable guard member 17 has its frame 18 resting upon the latter withits attached transparent window sheet 19 guarding the contents against the touch of the prospective lifted the lid 31. After the purchase has been made the cap 7 may by unscrewing be removed, the member 17 be withdrawn and discarded to facilitate access to the user, and the cap be replaced by screwing it down until the sealing ring 14 rests upon the top of the jar neck.
By placing the screw thread 12 upon the lining ring 11 rather than forming the engaging thread upon the cap skirty the latter is undefaced and unweakened.
'I'he annular lip 26 upon the flange 24 of the lid attaching rim 22 forms a guardand seat for the periphery ofthe lid. The ange 37, inset from the periphery of the lid not only guides vthe lid centrally of the attaching rim 22 as the lid is depressed but serves as a scraper in the manner hereinabove mentioned.
Throughout the specification and claims the.
