UNITED STATES rg rnnr OFFICE.
AUGUST MOEIBES, JR, AND ALBERT W. WEBER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOX-LID- HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. December 2, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST MOEBES, J r., and ALBERT H. W. WEBER, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders,.of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box lid holder, and particularly pertains to a device for holding the lid of a cigar box and the like, in an open position.
It is the object of this invention to provide a holder for box lids which is simple in construction, durable, and easily and quickly applied; and which is so designed and constructed that the box lid may be held in a number of different positions, so as to exhibit the contents of the box.
Other objects will appear in the following specification.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction. and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of the invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views showing the invention as applied. Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical sections of a cigar box, showing the invention thereon in side elevation.
In the drawings, A represents a box of any suitable description and B indicates a lid hinged thereon; the lid B being adapted to swing from its closed posit-ion over the open portion of the box, to its open position against the back of the box.
It is the essence of this invention to pro vide a means for. holding the lid B against movement in various positions, so as to expose the contents of the box, and which means is here shown as consisting of a clip comprising a pair of approximately parallel plates 2-2 connected together at their upper ends by a member 3, forming a bifur- The plates 2-2 and the portion 3 are preferably formed in one piece; the plate 2 being resilient and designed to coact with the plate 2 to engage the back of the box A, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Formed on one edge of the plate 2 is a flange 4:, which projects outwardly at right angles thereto, and has an upwardly extending ear 5 formed on its upper end. The front edge of the ear 5 inclines backwardly from its bottom at the point of the edge of the member 3 in alinement with the ear 5; the back edge of the latter paralleling the plat 2 and approximately on the same plane.
Formed on the'upper edge of the flange 4:, adjacent the ear 5, is a horizontal, inwardly projecting member 7 which extends at right angles to the ear 5 on the plane of the member 3. An inwardly projecting member 8 is formed on the flange 4 adjacent its lower edge, the inner face of which parallels the plate 2.
In the operation of this invention, the bifurcated structure comprising the plates 22' is placed astride the back of the box A with the member 3 resting upon the upper edge thereof; the plate 2 extending between the lid B and the back of the box A and bearing against the latter. When it is desired to support the lid B in substantially a horizontal position, when the box A is in the same position, the lid B is swung back so as to rest upon the projection 7 on the flange 4, as shown in Fig. 3; the ear 5 then extending upward beside the end edge of the lid B. The project-ion 7 thus acts to support the lid B and to prevent it from falling downward. To hold the lid B in an approximately vertical position, the ears 5 and 6 are positioned on each side of the lid, as shown in Fig. 4:; this being done by sliding the lid-holding device on the box A, so that the ears 5 and 6 will pass on each side of the lid. The ear 5 acts to prevent the lid B from tipping backward, while the ear 6 prevents it from tipping forward, thus retaining the lid in a Vertical position.
When it is desired to hold the lid B in its extreme open position, as shown in Fig. 5, the device is so disposed that the projection 8 will extend over the outer face of the lid B when the latter is folded back against the side of the box A. In this position, the lid is rigidly held against movement in either direction, and acts as a support for retaining the box in an inclined position.
The box-lid may be held in a vertical position, when the box is stood on edge, as shown in Fig. 6, by disposing the lid holding device with the projection 7 extending in front of the box-lid; the projection 7 acting to prevent the lid from swinging forward.
A spring-clip 9 is formed on the plate 2 and extends approximately parallel with the member 3, in such manner as to receive'the edgeof a price tag or similar article and hold it against the upper edge of the box or the inside of the lid B.
- The device is here shown as preferably formed in one piece, being struck from sheet metal and bent to shape, thus producing a lid holder which can be manufactured at small cost. It is obvious, however, that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, hence we do not wish to limit ourselves strictly to the construction herein set forth.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A box-lid holder fashioned from a single piece bent to form a pair of substantially parallel members connected together at one end, one of said members being formed with an extension along one edge and said extension being bent at right angles to said plate, and having a series of lid-engaging members, and the other of said members being slit-ted, and bent to form tag-holding means.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two sub- I scribing witnesses.
AUGUST MOEBES, JR. ALBERT H. W. WEBER.
