Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM A. OOLLORD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN vPAPER-FILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 7,648, dated September 17, 1850.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. CoLLoRD, of Cincinnati,in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Filers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication.
The objects of my invention are to provide a portable ler or receptacle for papers and documents which shall hold them compaetly,
protect them from dust, permit of and facilitate the examination of their titles while they remain in the file, theirready abstraction, and insertion in their proper places and order.
In the annexed drawings the same letters refer to like parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
To accomplish these objects I construct a box a of suitable dimensions, which is open at top and at one end. This portion I usually make of tinned iron. There is a lid b, commonly of wood, which fits easily Within the box. This lid has attached athwart its mid-length a rod c, whose ends project a little past the sides of the box. The ends of the rod are slightly hooked for the better retention of the free extremities of wire arms e, Which proceed from a spiral spring j', attached to the back of the box and imparting a downward tendency to the rod and lid. The slits d in the sides terminate in a shortstep or notch g, into which the ends of the rod are pushed when the lid is desired to be held up for the examination and manipulation of the papers. There is a loop or handle 7a on the top side of the lid about its middle, by which the lid is lifted. The spring may be incased by asecond plate or partition fi, if desired. There is a notch j in the front end of the lid, and a corresponding one k in the bottom of the box for the finger and thumb in the handling of the papers. A small strip Z serves to stiften the upper front corners, which otherwise would be liable to become bent.
The closed end of the box may be furnished with cleats m for the reception of a card bearing the title of the file.
Having thus fully, clearly, and exactly described the nature, construct-ion, and operation of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The arrangement and construction, after the manner substantially as described, of a box or receptacle for documents and papers having a lid fitting loosely within it, which is made to press down upon the papers bya spiral or other suitable spring.
2. The rod c or its equivalent attached to the lid and moving in the guide slits or apertures d in the sides of the box, the said slits terminating in a notch or shoulder g at their upper extremities for the reception and retention of the rod during `the manipulation and examination of the file.`
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand before two subscribing Witnesses.
W. A. COLLORD. Witnesses:
