SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,824, dated October 25, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARION A. WYOOUGH,

- a citizen of the United States, residing at Batesville, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvementin File-Gases, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the drawings hereto annexed.

My invention relates to cases forholding and 1)reservingdocuments, which consist in oblong boxes having one of their sides pivoted in such a manner that an internal spring shall press the free end ofthe said pivoted side against the contents of the box, to hold them securely in place while the box is being withdrawn or returned to its cell.

My invention consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement of the spring, by which strength and durability of tension and economy of space shall be secured.

As heretofore constructed a hinged lid in a file-box has been made to operate so as to hold the contents in place by means of a spring consisting in a piece of metal bent at an acute angle and secured underneath the lid in such a manner as to press the free end thereof down upon the contents of the box. This construction, however, owing to the pressing open of the spring by the action of the lid, does not secure durability of tension in so great a degree as one in which the lid is operated by a spiral spring which is so arranged that'the coils shall be contracted instead of expanded when the lid is opened. Where spiral springs have been used to operate such a lid they have been arranged in a manner less adapted to my purpose than the form above described. Accordingly I adopt the following construction. The box A is to be made of tin or any othersuitable material, and of any desired size,

preferably about four inches by eight to the side. Oneend is made open, and the other provided with cleats a upon three of its edges to form a recess, into which a label may be inserted for indicating the contents of the box at all times. One side, B, of the box is hinged transversely near theelosed end, and provided with a pocket, I), on its inner surface, extending from the hinged end nearly to the center, into which the two inner ends of spiral springs b are inserted'to force the opposite end of said side against the opposite side of the box, to hold thepapcrs firmly in place. The said springs are coiled about one and the same rod, 0, which is secured to opposite sides of the case, in order that the springs may be firmly-held in place, and strength and durabilityof tension thereby secured, while the outer ends of the springs rest upon ledges on the edges of the open side, against which the side or lid B is pressed when held open. A cross-piece, a, separates the open end and open side, to hold the box more firmly and compactly together. A ring is attached to the lid B, and another to the closed end of the box, by which it is to be withdrawn from its cell when desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The box A, having its closed or outer end provided with cleats for holding a label, and a partially-surrounding flange for limiting its in sertion into a cell,in combination withahinged side or lid having an inner pocket extending to its center, and two spiral sprin gs which are arranged npon asupporting-rod which is sccured in the sides of the box, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
