UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN O. CARPENTER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORGAN-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,131, dated May 28, 1878; application filed February 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN G. CARPENTER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Music Holder and Organ Combined, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a combination, with an organ or melodeon, of a convenient and ornamental case for holding books and sheetmusic.
This music-case is constructed of wood or other material, of any convenient size, with a cover which moves in the arc of a circle in opening and closing. The case is set into the top of the organ, as shown in the accompanyin g drawings.
Similar letters represent corresponding parts in the different figures.
Figure 1 represents the said music-case attached to or combined with the organ. A B O are the pockets or apartments of the musiccase. D is the cover, the upper edge being all of the cover that is in sight when it is open.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case itself, with the cover D closed. N is the top of the organ. G H represent the lower part of the case, which sits down into and below the top of the organ. The dotted lines D show the position of the cover when open.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the case.
Fig. 4 shows the frame-work of one end of the case. F is an arm attached at one endto the end of the cover, and the other end is pivoted to the frame P at S.
The other end of the case is, of course, constructed in the same manner, by means of which the cover D is made to move in the arc of a circle in opening and closing, as shown by the dotted lines D.
K is a spring, which presses against a sh oulder, I, on the under side and lower edge of the cover D when the cover is closed, by means of which the cover is held up in position, and is prevented from being jarred open.
By pulling slightly on the cover in opening it, the shoulder I is made to press back the spring K, and as the cover opens the shoulder I passes by the spring, and the cover is then free to open.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The combination, with an organ, of the book and music case, having the pockets B O and the rolling cover D, all constructed and arrangedsubstantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The spring K, in combination with the shoulder I on the rolling cover D, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
LYMAN G. CARPENTER.
Witnesses C. A. HAMMOND, HOMER WESTON.
