UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SERENA M. GARNES, or new YORK, N. Y.
HINGE-LOCK FOR SHUTTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,105, dated March 17, 1885.
Application filed January 24, 1885. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SERENA M. CARNES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinge-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to looks for hinges, and especially to looks or fasteners for preventing the accidental closing ofopen shutters.
It has for its object a novel and simple de vice which may be applied to the hinge of a shutter without reaching out beyond the window-stile, and which will not readily break and cannot get out of order.
It consists in a light tubular casting slotted longitudinally to permit it to slip over and upon the knuckles of a hinge and embrace the hinge-straps between the sides of its slots. To
insure greater efficiency one of the slots is provided with parallel flanges projecting from each side to embrace between them a portion of the upper strap, and thereby prevent a movement of the hinge.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of my invention as applied to a shutter-hinge. Fig. 2 is a perspective view,fron1 the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1, of my hinge-lock detached.
A is the lower leaf or strap of a shutter-.
hinge, and A its upper leaf.
B is a light cylindrical tubular casting of metal, whose bore is adapted to fit over the knuckles C of the hinge. Slots D D are out longitudinally in the tubular casting to receive and embrace the straps or leaves A A when the casting is fitted upon the knuckles G. The thickness of the tubular body B of the lock is small enough to allow it to slip down between the inner edge, 6, Fig. 1, of the lower leaf, A, and the knuckle of the upper leaf, A, which in the complete hinge embraces the pin projecting from the knuckle O of the lower leaf. The slot D (see Fig. 2) upon one side of the tubular body B of the lock body B, a strap or bar, Malone being left across its upper end to strengthen the device. To afiord a better hold for the lock upon the hinge, and to further strengthen it, flanges K K may be cast integrally therewith to project parallel to each other from each edge of the longer slot D.
lock is such as that the outer flange, K, is tan-- The position of the slot with reference to the tubular body B of the gential to said tubular body, as shown in the drawings. The upper ends of the flanges are connected by a transverse plate, h, constituting an extension or continuation of the bar h.
The casting of the body B and flanges K K of the device may be solid, as shown in the drawings, or be made of open-work to obtain greater lightness therein.
The fastener is made fast to the casing of the window by means of a chain, L, attached to an eye or ring, M, in the upper end of the device and to an eye or staple, N, in the easing.
The flanges of the lock are made to project from either side of the body B-in the one case to adapt it to be fitted on the right and in the other on the left hand side of the window.
I claim as my invention- Ahinge-lock consisting of a short tube 1011- gitudinally slotted to fit upon the knuckles and embrace the inner' ends of the straps of the hinge,in combination with parallel flanges projecting from the edges of either of its slots,
substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
