UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
GERHART BAUMAN, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
DOOR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,856, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed March 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERHART BAUMAN, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Closers for Doors, Gates, and Blinds, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish spring-closers for doors, gates, and blinds, so constructed that they will close the doors, gates, and blinds, however much or little they may be opened, and that they may be entirely hid from "iew.
A B are the two semi-tubular parts of the case, upon the rear ends of which are formed lugs to receive a ring, C, to fasten the said parts together.
Upon the forward end of one of the parts, asA, is formed a face-plate, D, which is made with an offset to correspond with and fit into the rabbet in the easing into which the rear edge of the door or blind shuts. When the closer is applied to gates the face-plate D is made without an offset.
The forward end of the part B of the case enters an aperture in the face-plate D, and has a lip formed upon its outer side to keep it in place in the said aperture.
Within the case A B is placed a spiral spring, E, the forward end of which rests against transverse flanges F, formed upon the inner surface of the forward part of the case A B.
The rear end of the spring E rests against a button, G, formed upon the rear end of a flexible metal strap, H, which passes longitudinally through the spring E, through notches in the adjacent edges of the flanges F, and has a small slot in its forward end to receive a hook,
(Model.
I, formed upon the end of the small plate J, which is designed to be attached to the side of the rear edge of the door, gate, or blind.
To and between flanges formed upon the outer side of the part A of the case, in the angle between the said part and the face-plate D, is pivoted a small pulley, K, which projects through slots in the said part A and in the said face-plate D, so that the face of the said pulley K may be at or near the central line of the case A B and flush with the outer surface of the face-plate D.
The case A B is designed to be inserted in a hole bored in the casing or post of the door,
gate, or blind, and is secured in place by screws inserted through holes in the said face plate D.
Vith this construction, when the door, gate, or blind is opened the metal strap H will be drawn outward around the pulley K, putting the spring E under tension, so that as soon as the door, gate, or blindis released the spring E will draw the said door, gate, or blind shut.
By swinging the door back against the wall the tension of the spring E will hold the door open until it is swung away from the wall, when it will be closed by the tension of the spring.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a door'closer, the two inwardly-flanged half-tubes A B, secured together by a ring inclosing end lugs, and a rabbeted plate, D, detachably connected to the section A, and in which the section B ters and is held, substantially as described, to adapt them to be used with a spiral spring, rod, and hook-plate, as shown and specified.
GERHART BAUMAN.
