CHARLES s. WHIPPLE, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, AssIeNoE' TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE W. GODDARD, OF SAME PLACE;
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,823, dated April 17, 1877; application filed February 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. WHIPPLE, of the c ty and county of New London, of the State of Gonnecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door or Shutter Fasteners 5 and do hereby declare the same to door checks or fasteners ana'ogous to that described in the Patent No. 185,466, granted to me December 19, 1876. Instead of the rotary catch, as therein described, I use a slide-bolt provided with a T-shaped head; but my present improvement applies to either construc tion, and consists in the combination of a 1'0- tary latch, provided with two notches, with the slotted arm and its catch, having the T- shaped head.
In constructing the doorcheck, as shown in the said drawings, I provide the slide-bolt A with a T-catch projecting from the inner end of the bolt, and composed of a neck, a, and a head, b, formed and arranged as shown.
The slide-bolt has a case, B, for supporting and guiding it in its rectilinear movements, and it is provided with a knob, 0, for moving it back and forth. The slide-bolt may be operated by a key. The bolt-case, provided with the bolt, furnished with the T-catch, is to be fastened or secured to a door, the bolt being to operate with a notched and slotted arm, G, pivoted or hinged to the door frame or casin g, or to a support-piece, D, to be secured thereto.
The arm 0 has at its inner end a rectangular opening or mouth, d, and it also has a long slot, 6, opening into and extending from the said mouth in manner as represented. The slot is to receive the neck of the T-catch, in order to put the latter in engagement with the arm. The mouth a is to be of sufficient size to receive the bolt when it is shot forward, or in the position as shown in Fig. 5, and the arm is turned into a right angle with the bolt, it being so represented in the said figure. When the bolt and arm are in such positions, they will prevent the door from being opened. 0n retracting the belt a short distance, until the neck of the T-catch is brought directly opposite the inner end of the slot of the arm,
the door may be opened and the T-catch put in engagement with the arm, in order for the two to limit the extent of opening of the door.
In carrying out my invention, there is pivoted to the side of the arm U a latch, E, provided with two notches, f g, arranged in it in manner as represented. This latch may be turned down upon the head of the T-catch, and will serye to hold the door open in either of two positions.
I claim- The combination of the rotary latch E, having notches f g, with the slotted arm 0 and the T-piece to operate therewith, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specitied.
CHARLES S. WHIPPLE.
