SCOVEL C. STAOY, OF TEGUMSEH, MICHIGAN.
wRlTlNG-TABLET. i
4 SPECIFICATION lforming part of Letters Patent No. 263,613, dated August 29, 1882.
Application tiled December 15, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Scovnr. C. STAcY. a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Writi11gTablet,ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the Writing-tablet hereinafter described, comprising a blotter, writing-sheets, gluing-strip, fastenin gs, pieces of twine or equivalent-s, and a cover with eyelet-holes in its back; also, in a tablet of writin gsheets glued together by a strip and pro, vided with a cover having eyelet--holes in its back edge, and tined fastenings in the back edge of said tablet, securely fastened thereto by means of the strip.
In the vaccompanying drawings, Figure l is aperspective view of my improved tablet and cover, one leaf of the cover and the blottersheet of the tablet being thrown open, and a little more than half the sheets composing the tablet being removed. Fig. 2 is a broken vertical longitudinal section on an enlarged scale in the line a* a: of Fig. 1, one lid or leaf of th'e cover being shown thrown open. Fig. 3 isla horizontal section in the line y y of Fig. 2.
To make my tablet-cover A two pieces of tag-board, heavy cloth, or other flexible material, are glued or pasted upon the inner surface of a material known to the trade as leatherette.7 The piecesof tag-board or cloth are so attached as to leave uncovered a small portion, b, of .the leatherette. This portion b forms the exible back edge of the cover. To this uncovered portion of leatherette a strip of stout pasteboard or other similar material, c,.is
- attached. This strip is made narrower than the uncovered portion b of the leatherette, so as to leave a thin marginfof leatherette free and uncovered between the rearedges of the tag-board and the upper and 'lower edges of the strip c. Y This strip c is confined in position by a hexible strip of cloth, d, secured in place by having its ends passed beyond said strip c and pasted or glued between the leatherette and tag-board lining thereto. This construction forms a durable and flexible cover. Through the rear edge of the leatherette, and also through the pasteboard llingc and the cloth strip d, eyelet-holes are cut, and into these holes eyelets f are inserted.
Sheets of stationery or writingpaper form the tablet B. The rear edges or ends of these sheets are united and conlined in position by over upon the last or bottom sheet of the tablet, and not upon the first ortop sheet. Through this `piece. g, and before it is glued upon the tablet-sheets, fnstenings h, having two-times, are pierced, passing from the inside through the strip y, which fastenings are securely held in place by the strip g'when glued against the ends of the tablet sheets. Pieces of twine or wire m are passed around the necks of these fastenings and their ends carried up an inch or so above the top sheet of the tablet and tied in eyelet-'holes u ot' a blotter or blotting-paper sheet, c', as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the draw` ings. After these fastenings are pierced through the stripg and the pieces of twine or wire are passed `around them'the strip of tagboard g is'then glued against the back edges or ends ofthe sheets composing the tablet, and
around upon the last or bottom sheet of such thus holdingthe sheets of the tablet securely together and holding the tined fastenings and pieces of twine in their proper positions. The blotter-sheet of the tablet is stiffened at the points where the eyelets are inserted by a strip of leatherette or tlexible material, so that the twine or wire by which the blotter-sheet :is attached to the tablet will not tear out the eyelet-holes.
The above description describes the tablet and cover as two separate articles. By insertng the tined fastenings which project from the rear end of the tablet through the eyeletholes in the back edge of the cover, and by turning down said tines in opposite directions closely against the outside surface of the back edge of the cover, the tablet and cover are firmly and perfectly united together :as one article. The blotter-sheet has a flexible connection with the tablet and can be adjusted readilyv for use. 'The tablet of writing-sheets also has a flexible connection with the cover by means of the strip g and fastenings la, while the lids of the cover are also flexible and per- IDC feetly independent in their movements from the tablet of writing-sheets, and at the same time all the parts are securely united together as one article, When all the sheets of the tablet shall have been used by straightening the tines of the fastenings at the back edge ot' the cover the skeleton of the tablet may be re- 'moved and a new tablet inserted in the cover,
as before, thus rendering the cover susceptibley of continued and indenite use.
I have described the tablet as having a back edge, the same as an ordinary book; but as the sheets ot' the tablet are placed with their upper edge against the portion of the cover known as the back edge 7 said back edge becomes, in the use of the tablet, the top edge.
It' desirable, the blotter-sheet may have a calendar or businesscard, or both, printed upon the upper side; and in some cases the pasteboard strip or iilling at the back edge ot' the cover may be dispensed with without departing from my invention.
1n the above description `and drawings I have made use of two tined fastenings in the tablet and two corresponding eyelet-holes in the cover; but a less or greater number of said fastenings and eyelet-holes may be used without departing from my invention.
ings h, pieces of twine m, and cover A, with eyelet-holes in its back l), the Whole constructed and operating as described.
2. A tablet of writing-sheets glued together by a strip, g, and provided with a cover hav- Aing eyelet-holes in its backl edge, and tined fastenings in the back edge of said tablet, se-
curely fastened thereto by means of the strip' ,9, substantially as described.
