PENCIL BOX Filed March 22, 1949 IN V EN TOR. fl/W/p PA /MAX Patented Feb, 27, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates particularly to a device intended for use by students so that they may conveniently carry pens, pencils and drawing instruments and the like, with their note books.
The principal object is to provide a construction which is simple and convenient and can be made cheaply.
The form shown combines a box with a socalled loose leaf or ring binder.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book and box or case combination embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of a fragment of the combination of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an inside view of one end of the book.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View partly in section showing the inside of the box.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a brace which forms one end of the box.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the box, the cover being shown open.
The binder consists of a flat back It with covers H, II hinged along the lines I 2, l2 in the usual manner. Inside the binder, snap rings is of any suitable type are supported by a, metallic strip l5 which is riveted at each end by a rivet I B to the back and to the box.
The body of the box or case is formed of suitable material, usually of board with a suitable coating of paper, leather, plastic, etc., and has a bottom 11, sides 18 and I9, a cover 2!! and a securing flap 2|. The cover and flap are hinged and creased at 22 and 23 so that the cover can be opened out as shown in Fig. 6.
The ends of the box are formed of sheet metal brackets 24 of U-shape with arms 25, 25 which are riveted at 26, 26, to the sides l8 and 19 of the body. These brackets reinforce the ends of the box and provide substantial abutments for the action of snap fasteners having the parts 26' and 21. Part 26' also serves as a rivet for securing the side l8 to the adjacent arms of the brackets 24.
By such a device pens and pencils and other small personal articles used by a student may be carried with a note book where they are always available and unlikely to get lost.
The edges of the covers II, II may be connected by a zipper so as to form an enclosure not only for the note paper but for other papers or books. Similarly the edges of the cover flap 21 may be connected to the edge of the box.
I claim:
A pencil box comprising an elongated body portionrectangular in cross-section and having integrally connected front, back and bottom portions, a, cover integrally hinged to the back portion and having a flap overlapping the front portion, rigid U-shaped brackets forming the ends of the body portion, rivets extending through the brackets and front and rear portions for fastening the same together, snap fastening members protruding from the rivets on said front portion and complementary snap fastening members carried by the cover flap and adapted to be pressed into interlocking engagement with the snap fastening members on the front portion directly over the brackets whereby the pressure of the fastening action is resisted by the rigid brackets.
