LOUIS STREIT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis STREiT, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as loose leaf binders; and the object thereof is to provide an improved binder of this class by means of which loose or independent leaves may be conveniently bound together in any desired numbers; a further object being to provide an improved binder of the class specified for use in binding record sheets, invoice sheets, pamphlets, cuts, drawings, pictures and the like; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved binder showing the same open and showing a number of leaves bound therein, parts of the construction being broken away, Fig. 2 a partial section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and ;Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 4 l of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a back block or support a of wood or other suitable material, the length of said block being approximately the same as the length of the leaves or other articles to be bound together, and this block is provided with a covering 6 of leather or other flexible material which also serves as an outer covering for the side boards 0 of the binder, said side boards 0 being also provided with an inner covering (Z of paper, cloth or similar material. The block a is convex in cross section on its outer side and plain on its inner side and is provided with three transverse grooves (4 a and a and secured to the sides of said block by means of screws 6 are metal strips 6, and these metal strips are covered on their inner sides by flexible sheets f of canvas or other fibrous material secured be- Specification of Letters Patent.

tween said strips and the block a and pasted or otherwise secured to the inner sides of the side boards 0.
Passing through the central transverse groove a in the block a is a screw 9 having right and left threads, one end of which is adapted to turn in the corresponding metal strip 0, and the other end of said screw is provided with a trunnion g which passes through the other metal strip 6 and through the corresponding part of the binding Z) and is provided with an annular head or end portion, and said screw is adapted to be turned by means of a key it having a socket if to receive the head or end portion 9 of the screw g. In each of the grooves 64 and a in the block a is placed a transverse rod 6, the ends of which are fixed or fitted in the metal strips 6 and secured thereto by screws i and mounted on the rods z' and the screw 9' are two parallel jaw plates j which are adapted to be drawn together or forced apart by turning the screw g, the direction of the movement of said jaw plates depending on the direction in which said screw is turned.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing, I have shown at is a number of leaves bound between the jaw plates 7', and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
In practice, all that is necessary is to place one edge of the leaves In or other articles which it is desired to bind together between the jaw plates j and then turn the screw 9 so as to force said jaw plates together, and this operation will securely bind the leaves in position, and whenever additional leaves are to be inserted the screw 9 is turned in the opposite direction, the jaw plates are drawn apart, the additional leaves are inserted, and screw g is then turned so as to force or draw the aw plates j together.
My invention is in no way limited to the sides or side boards 0 of the binder, nor to the material employed, nor to other details of the construction herein described except the block a, the screw g, the jaw plates j mounted on said screw, and the method of operating said screw as herein shown and described, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended. claim,
without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a binding of the class described, a back block or support provided with 'a covering and with which the side boards of the bind ing are flexibly connected, parallel side bars at the opposite sides of the back or support and with which the side boards are also flexibly connected, transverse guide rods secured to and between said side bars, a right and left screw mounted centrally between said rods and centrally of said side bars, and
parallel jaw bars mounted on said guide rods and on said screw, said side bars being fully covered and concealed, and said screw being provided at one end with an angular exten sion which extends through said covering and by means of which said screw may be operated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 12th day of December 1908.
