UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD B. IVESTON, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO MAIILON B. WALLACE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 637,309, dated November 21, 1899.
Application led April 3, 1899. Serial No. 711,594.. (No model.)
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. WESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the device for which Letters Patent No. 442,206, dated December 9, 1890, were issued to Augustus Rosss assignee. In the device therein described and claimed it has been found impracticable to -use the part 4, bound into the cover l, by reason of said part 4 being too expensive to make the binder commercially useful.
My invention therefore relates to a construction which eliminates this part 4 and provides a new way of securing the leaves to be bound to the posts over which they are placed.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure I shows a perspective view of my binder, the same being open. Fig. II is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the posts. Fig. III is a view similar to Fig. II, excepting that the` binding-bar is of somewhat modified construction. Fig. IV is a'detail view of one end of the binding-bar.
l and 2 are the two leaves of the cover, which may or may not be sti, but which are secured together by the flexible back 3. Secured near the inner edge of the cover 2 are two hollow posts 4, which are provided with interior threads adapted to engage the screws 5. These screws 5 are provided with enlarged heads.
6 is a binding plate or bar, preferably made of steel and having a raised portion 7, which enables the same to be easily handled.
8 are the sheets or leaves placed over the posts 4 and held down by the bar 6.
In Fig. III I have shown a modiiied form of binder-strip 6, said strip not having the raised portion 7.
9 are recesses at the ends of the bar 6, which preferably are formed as shown in Fig. IV, with the entrances thereto at one side, the distance between the two entrances being somewhat greater than the distance between the /two posts 4. It would be practicable to form these recesses 9 by simply allowing two projections to make a fork at the ends of the bar 6; but the recess I have shown in Fig. IV is to be preferred, as it has no Ipoints to tear the leaves 8.
The device is operated by first removing the bar 6 and the screws 5. Then the leaves 8 are placed in position and the screws 5 inserted in the posts 4. Next the bar 6 is sprunginto place, and the leaves 8 are thereby firmly bound together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In atemporary binder, the combination of a cover formed of two sections, adjustable posts secured to one of said sections, enlarged heads to said posts, and a binding-bar constructed of a single flat strip of spring-steel and provided with recesses at its ends adapted to engage the said enlarged heads and bind the leaves placed in said binder, the openings to said recesses being of somewhat greater distance apart than the distance between said binding-posts, substantially as described.
EDWARD B. WESTON.
In presence of- C. S. BILLMAN, AL. MEIsNEE.
