Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 19, 1909i To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SPENCE, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf binders, and the objectof theinvention is to devise an extremely simple form of binder, which may be readily detachable and which is especially adaptable for school use, although it may be with equal facility adapted for general use and it consists essentially of a bar suitably held in the binding end of the back cover and provided with upwardly extending back sockets, and a central pin with a reduced T-shape head, and a (3o-acting bar suitably secured in the binding end of the front cover and provided with pins to fit into the sockets, and a revoluble button recessed and provided with a slot slightly larger in size than the cross bar of the T-shape head of the pin in the opposing part, such button being designed to be turned, so that the slot extends crosswise under the T-shape head to lock the binder, and the parts being otherwise constructed and arranged in detail as hereinafter more particularly explained.

A is the lower or back cover of the binder, which has bound into the binding end a bar B having located toward each end the upwardly extending sockets C.
D is a pin provided with a tapered and reduced upper end D having a substantially T-shaped head D2 at the top as indicated.
E is a bar, which is suitably secured in the binding end of the front cover and is pro* vided with end pins E', which are designed to pass into the sockets attached to the opposing bar.
F is a button provided with a centrally recessed portion F having a slot F2 therein, such slot being slightly in excess of the size of the T-shaped head D2. The button F is swiveled in suitable bearings F 3 in the bar E and is preferably provided with a stop Ft to limit the movementl of the T-shaped head within the recess F Of course, the button F may be formed fiat, although the form I have shown is the preferable form.
The paper of the loose leaf binder is provided with three perforations, two to pass over the sockets C and one to pass over the central pin D. The top cover is placed in position by inserting the pins E into the sockets C, thereby forming a guide to insure that the pin D enters the button F, the slot of which is set to register with the T-shaped head. As soon as the top cover is placed in position with the binding end set as hereinbefore referred to the button F is turned, so that the slot extends crosswise of the T-shaped head when the binder is locked in position. p
Such a binder as I describe is very simple, cheaply made and convenient and adaptable for various purposes in which it is not necessary that the binder should be locked by a key.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a loose leaf binder, the combination with the back bar suitably bound to the back cover and provided with end sockets and central stem or pin provided with a reduced end having a T-shaped head, of the top bar provided with pins to co-act with the socket in the lower bar and a suitable button suitably swiveled in the top bar and provided with a slot designed to co-act with the T-shaped head of the pin of the lower bar, and a stop to limit the turning of the button as and for the purpose specified.
