.4 Claims. (CLlZl--ll-) ThisY invention relates to a idling device, such -as' is commonly used to nie bills, invoices and other papers.
Such devices commonly comprise two pointed posts on which the paper is impal-ed, and; two curved arms adapted to ybe swung or rocked to lregister with the posts and retain the papers thereon.
The objects `of this `invention Aare two fold. First to provi-de simple and effectual'v means to yieldingly retain the arms in post registering and/'or post non-registering position, and secondly to provide means for locking the posts inregistering or paper retaining positionand/or non-registering position.
The. objects of this invention are achieved by the means hereinafter described and illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. .1 isa top plan view;

Fig. 3 is a View of the underside partly broken away; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the rod connecting the arms.

Base l is a at piece oi metal with a raised portion la' with a hollow interior which contains the mechanism for controlling the curved arms. Base .plate i2 covers -th-e -holfl'ow interior 4of the `raised.portion la.
Thel vertical posts 3 are rigidly secured to vvthe base I7 and are hollow and provided with a bevelled end to receive curved arms 4, 4. Arms 4, 4 are adapted to swing or rock back and forth from post engaging position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to post non-engaging position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Arms 4, 4 extend through transverse slots 5, 5 in the wall of the raised portion la of the base I into the hollow interior. In closed position the arms 4 extend upwardly adjacent the front ends of the slots 5, 5. In open position they swing back to the rear ends of the slots.
The arms 4, 4 are joined by rod 4b which may be integral with the arms and which extends lengthwise of the hollow interior of the raised portion of la of the base I. The rod 4b is rockable between lugs 5, 6 and lug l (see Fig. 3) which bear or engage against opposite sides of the rod 4b thus serving with the top wall of the base 2i portion la and the base plate 2 as `vjournals or bea-rings -for said Irod 4b.

Engagement of 'the lugs on 'the ends of the springs ncause the springs il? and iii to slightly bend across Ythe round rod 4b atpthe points 'where the .rods .are providedv `with the iiats 8 and 9;. Flat '3 is 'horizontal when the arms are in 'closed or post registering position and spring i0 bearing on this fiat vsurface yieldingly retains them in that position- Flat 9 is horizontal when 'the arms 'are in open or Apost non-:registering position and spring H' bearing on this flat surface yieldingly retains them in open position.. When the springs are bearing on the ilats they "are substantially straight', not distorted, "thus, insuring a 'minimum of strainv on the springs and hence longer life. Since it is desired Ato insure that Vthe arms will .be swung back intor closed position the spring l0' is made of heavier, stronger, resilient material .than spring 1"! to insure that the arms will' swing ful-1y into closed position.
Of course the rarms may be readily swung from open to closed position and vice versa by the nsers' hand Yexcept when locked in closedY position by the hereinafter described means,
A flat locking bar I6 is slidably mounted on portion Ia of base l by means of headed screws or pins l1, I1 which project from portion Ia through longitudinal slots Ilia, I6a in bar I6. The bar is located so that it passes over the rear ends of slots 5, 5 and is provided with an upturned flange 16d on its inner longitudinal edge adapted to engage the rear of arms 4, 4 to prevent them from rocking out of post engaging position. Two slots |611, I'Bb are provided in the.
bar I6 to receive the arms 4, 4 when swung back into open or non-post registering position. When the locking bar is slid to the left in Fig. 1 to the position shown in dotted lines these slots register with slots 5, 5 in the base and permit the arms to swing back. When slid in the other direction, to the right in Fig. 1 the flange is in substantially engaging position with the arms to lock them in closed position.
To normally urge the locking bar to locking position the bar IG is provided with a down turned lug llic at one end thereof. Studs I8a and I5b and base portion Ia respectively receive spring I9 which bears against lug llic and base portion la. It is held under tension and constantly urges the locking bar into locking position.
When the arms 4, 4 are in slots l 6b, I6b they act as stops preventing the spring from moving the locking bar. When the operator swings the arms 4, 4 to closed position the spring I9 automatically slides the bar to locking position. To open the arms it is only necessary for the operator to press on lug I6c to move the locking bar to the left in Fig. 1, to position shown in dotted lines in which the slots |61), I6b register with slots 5, 5, and then push the arms back to non-post registering position.
It will be seen from the above description that the device described achieves the objects of this invention. Although described in some detail by way of illustration, it is obvious that various modications of the invention are possible without departing from the spirit thereof What we claim as our invention is:
l. A ling device comprising in combination a base having a hollow portion open at the underside and a pair of slots through its upper side, a pair of posts projecting upwardly from the base and rigidly secured thereto, -a pair of retaining arms pivotally mounted on the base and rockable into and out of registering position with the posts, the lower ends of said arms extending through the slots in the hollow portion of the base, a rod connecting the lower ends of the retaining arms and extending through the hollow base portion and provided with a at thereon, a leaf spring extending transversely of the rod oppositie the flat, a plate for closing the underside of the hollow base, said plate being provided with lugs engaging opposite ends of the leaf spring to cause it to bear against the rod and engage the flat to yieldingly hold the arms in a predetermined position, and screw means for detachably securing said plate to the base.
2. A ling device comprising in combination a base having a hollow portion open at the underl the lower ends of said arms extending through the slots in the hollow portion of the base, a rod connecting the lower ends of the retaining arms and extending through the hollow base portion and provided with two longitudinally spaced flats thereon arranged at dierent angles, a pair of leaf springs extending transversely of the rod one opposite each at, a plate for closing the underside of the hollow base, said plate being provided with lugs engaging opposite ends of the leaf spring to cause them to bear against the rod and engage the iiats to yieldingly hold the arms in and out of post registering position, and screw means for detachably securing said plate to the base.
3. A filing device as claimed in claim 2 in which the leaf spring which holds the arms in post engaging position is heavier than the spring which holds it out of post engaging position.
4. A filing device comprising in combination a base having a hollow portion open at the underside and a pair of slots through its upper side, a pair of posts projecting upwardly from the base and rigidly secured thereto, a pair of retaining arms pivotally mounted on the base and rockable into and out of registering position with the posts, the lower ends of said arms extending through the slots in the hollow portion of the base, a rod connecting the lower ends of the retaining arms and extending through the hollow base portion and provided with a ilat thereon, a leaf spring extending transversely of the rod opposite the at, a plate for closing the underside of the hollow base, said plate being provided with lugs engaging opposite ends of the leaf spring to cause it to bear against the rod and engage the flat to yieldingly hold the arms in a predetermined position, screw means for detachably securing said plate to the base, and means mounted on the base for locking the arms in post registering position comprising a bar, one Side of which is provided with an upturned ange and engages the arms to retain them in post registering position and provided with slots therein to receive the arms in post non-registering position, saidr bar being slidable into and out of locking position, and spring means urging the bar into locking position.
