V Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
Application filed March 17, 1917. Serial No. 155,532.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKFORD M. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Campbell, in the county of Franklin and State of Nebraska, ln ve invented a new and useful Sheet-Music Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for holding sheets of music, and the invention aims to provide a novel form of booklike container, so constructed that the sheets may be placed readily therein and with equal facllity be removed therefrom.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to, enhance the utility of devices of that type towhich the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a music holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being partially opened;
. Fig. 2 is a top plan showing the means whereby the constituent leaves of the holder are clamped together releasably;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4t is a fragmental elevation wherein the holder is shown in open position;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 4. and
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 4:-
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a pair of covers 1 united along their inner longitudinal edges by hinge strips 2, a filler 3 being interposed between the strips 2 and between the inner longitudinal edges of the covers 1. Near to their lower edges and adjacent their outer edges, the covers 1 are supplied, upon their inner faces, with supports 4 of any desired form. Each cover 1 carries upon its inner face, and adjacent its lower edge, a leafholding means which may be in the form of a clip 5. Mounted on the hinge strips 2 and disposed between the inner longitudinal edges of the covers 1 is a block 6 which may be secured to the filler 3. The block 6 carries a button 7 The invention comprises a pair of main leaves 8 in the form of open frames, across which are extended transparent panes 9 which preferably are made of celluloid, isinglass or the like, the panes 9 being held to the main leaves 8 by means of face frames 10 which may be glued or secured otherwise to the leaves 8 beyond the peripheries of the openings in the main leaves. The inner longitudinal edges of the main leaves 8 are connected by hinge strips 11 between which is interposed a filler 12. As shown in Fig. 5, the face frames 10 which hold the panes 9 to the main leaves 8 may overlap the inner hinge strip 11. Near to their lower edges, the main leaves 8 carry leaf holding means which may be clips 14.
The numeral 15 denotes a pair of auxiliary leaves in the form of open frames to which are applied transparent panes 16 held in place by face frames 17 like the elements 10. Hinge strips 18 unite the lower edges of the auxiliary leaves 15 with the lower edges of the main leaves 8. Secured to one of the hinge strips 11 which unites the main leaves 8 along their inner longitudinal edges is a flexible tongue 19 having an opening 20 adapted to be engaged by the button 7. A flexible element 21 is mounted at its lower end on a block 22 carried by the lower portion of the inner hinge strip 2 which unites the covers 1. The upper end of the flexible element 21 is secured to the lower end of the inner hinge strip 11 which unites the main leaves 8. The longitudinal edges 23 of the auxiliary leaves 15 are spaced apart and are not connected together. Adjacent their upper outer corners, the auX iliary leaves 15 are provided with pivot elements 2% on which latches are mounted to swing, each latch including an arm 25 having a finger piece 26 and a clasp 27.
Let it be supposed that the structure is arranged as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Then the first sheet of a piece of music is placed against the inner face of the left hand cover 1 and is held in place by the corresponding clip 5. The second sheet of the music is placed between the left hand main leaf 8 and the left hand auxiliary leaf 15. The third sheet of the piece of music is placed between the right hand main leaf 8 and the right hand auxiliary leaf 15. The fourth sheet of the piece of music is placed against the right hand cover 1 and is engaged by the corresponding clip 5. The auxiliary leaves 15 are swung up against the main leaves 8, and the latches are manipulated so that the clasps 27 engage the upper edges of the main leaves 8. The main leaves 8 are swung upwardly against the covers 1, and the tongue 19 is engaged with the button 7 When the parts are thus arranged, the leaves are upheld, adjacent their outer edges, by the supports 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
It will now be obvious that the sheets of music between the leaves 8 and 15 may be read on both sides, as these leaves are turned over, the connected main and auxiliary leaves swinging, in a common direction with the covers 1 on the pivotal mountings afforded by the tongue 19 and the flexible element 21. The first page of music may be read of]? the left hand cover 1, and the last page of music may be read off the right hand cover 1.
The construction embodying the main and auxiliary leaves may be duplicated to any desired extent. There is an advantage in the detachable connection afforded by the tongue 19 and the button 7 since this part of the device permits the main leaves 8 to be swung down into the position of Fig. 1, under which circumstances, a double sheet of music of suflicient width to extend entirely across the covers 1, may be placed thereagainst. It has been pointed out hereinbefore that the latches which are mounted on the pivot elements 24: are disposed adj acent the upper outer corners of the auxiliary leaves 15, but the drawings clearly show that an additional set of these latches may be placed adjacent the inner upper corners of the leaves 15 if desired.
Briefly considered, the device hereinbefore described comprises a pair of covers 1 hingedly connected at 2 along their inner longitudinal edges, main transparent leaves 8 hingedly connected at 11 along their inner longitudinal edges, separate means 21 and 197 for connecting the main leaves with the covers adjacent the inner longitudinal edges of the main leaves and the covers for opening and closing movement, one of said means, to wit 19-7, being in the form of a releasable connection, auxiliary transparent leaves 15 hinged at 18 along their transverse edges to the transverse edges of the main leaves 8 for opening and closing movement with respect to the main leaves, in a direction at right angles to the direction in which the covers 1 and the main leaves swing, and means represented by the latches.
25-27 for releasably connecting each auxiliary leaf 15 with the corresponding main leaf 8.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A music holder comprising covers hingedly connected along their inner longitudinal edges; main transparent leaves hingedlyconnected at their inner longitudinal edges; means for connecting the main leaves with the covers adjacent the inner longitudinal edges of the main leaves and the covers for opening and closing movement; auxiliary transparent leaves hingedly connected along their transverse edges with the transverse edges of the main leaves for opening and closing movement with respect to the main leaves in a direction at right angles to thedirection in which the main leaves and the covers open and close; and means for releasably connecting each auxiliary leaf with the corresponding main leaf.
2. A music holder comprising covers hingedly connected along their inner longitudinal edges, main transparent leaves hingedly connected along their inner longitud inal edges; separate means for connecting the main leaves with the covers adjacent the inner longitudinal edges of the leaves and the covers for opening and closing movement, one of said separate means being a releasable connection; auxiliary transverse leaves hinged along their transverse edges to the transverse edges of the main leaves for opening and closing movement with respect to the main leaves in a direction at right angles to the direction in which the covers and the main leaves swing; and meansfor releasably connecting one auxiliary leaf with the corresponding main leaf.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses FRANKFORD M. COOK. Witnesses:
