CHARLES M. OOTT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,247, dated October 3, 1882.
Application filed December 9, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. COTT, a citizen of the United States, residingat Columbus, county of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVriting-Tablets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tablet-blotters in which the blotter forms one of the covers and is made reversible to renew the blotting-surface.
Myiniprovement particularly relates to the means by which the blotter-cover is attached to the tablet and adapted to be reversed in position, and the specific matter of such ll'Il provement will be made the subject of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved tablet-blotter, looking at the blotter-hinge attachment; Fig. 2, a similar view, the blotter being shown as detached by removing one of the clasp-pins; Fig. 3, a section ot'the blotter and tablet, taken through the hinge attachment; and Fig. 4 shows the inner side of the blotter, to which the hinge knuckles or loops are pasted. Fig.
5 is one of the hinge-pins, and Fig. 6 an enlarged section of the hinge-forming parts.
The tablet is of the usual make, and the blotter to forms the upper cover. It is the means by which the blotter is attached which constitutes my improvement. The attachment consists of a strip of paper, I), pasted to the united edges of the tablet-sheet, so as to form loop-knuckles c 0, similar loop-knuckles, (Z d, pasted to the edge of the blotter, and a clasppin, 0, adapted to unite the loop-knuckles of the blotter and of the tablet. A single strip may form the tablet-knuckles, and is doubled and pasted together over the edge I) of the united sheets and upon the straw-board of the back, leaving the end edges of the doubled strip open to form the hinge-knuckles c 0 over the united edges of the tablet-sheets to receive one branch of the clasp -pin. The knuckles d d of the blotter are formed by separate strips doubled and pasted to the blotter, so that the loop-knuckles will project beyond its edge to receive the other branch of the clasp-pin.
I prefer to use Manila paper for the hinge knuckles or loops and to paste it to the tablet so that it will be about one-halfan inch shorter at the loop-kntickle-forming ends than the width of the tablet, the blotter loop-knuckles being placed so as to correspond with those of the tablet. The tablet loopknuckles are so formed as to be in line with the-top edgeof the tablet, so that the blotter will be hinged along such line.
The clasp pins may be of any suitable kind; but I prefer the form shown as being well adapted for the purpose.
In attaching the blotter, put the straight branch cof the clasp through the loopknnckle d of the blotter and the eyed branch 0 into the loop-knuckle c of the tablet. When so placed the clasp-pins serve as spring-staples to hold them in place. They may be easily removed and the blotter reversed when soiled on one side and the pins again inserted.
The knuckles or loops may be pasted to a new blotter, which may have a stittening-strip, a, of paper, pasted over the pasted ends of the knuckles.
The strip a may be of the samepaper as the hinge-tormingloops; but I prefer to make it of light blotting-paper, so as to have the entire surface of blotting material, and thus adapt the blotter to absorb ink when the writing is commenced at the top of the tablet.
It will be understood that the looped backing-strip I) has its lapped parts pasted to the under cover and to the back edge of the tablet in such manner as to leave the outer lapped parts at the ends of the tablet unpasted to the ends next the end of the tablet. The eyed ends of the spring clamps or pins areiuserted into these pockets and held therein by said eyed ends and the clamping action of said spring-pins, so that they cannot work out in handling the tablet, while the clamping action of the spring-pins upon the blotter cover loops d d is made upon the outsides of said pockets at the back of the tablet, the object being to provide acheap and durable pasted hinge part for the tabletand for the blotter, adapted to receive separate spring clamping-pins at the edge of the back of the tablet.
I claim- In a tablet-blotter, the combination, with the tablet part having a lapped backing-strip, b,
form the pockets 0 c, which are only open at of paper or fabric, pasted so as to form the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set [0 pockets 0 0 upon the back edge at or near each my hand in the presence of two subscribing end of the tablet, 0f the blotting-sheet a, havwitnesses.
in g the lapped pasted paper or fabric loops cl (Z and the spring clamp-pins 0 0, the said clamppins being separately fitted into and connect- \Vitnesses: ing each blotter-100p with each tablet-pocket D. T. MCNAGHYIION, upon the back edge of said tablet, substan- A. L. RALSTON. tially as described, for the purpose specified. 7
