comamnn 3001mm Ann MEMORANDUM PAD Application filed May 22,
My invention relates to improvements in combined book marks and memorandum pads whereby the memorandum pad is insertable between any two leaves of the book to serve as a book mark and, in addition, to enable notes to be made by the reader as he is readmg 1 A further object is to devise a combined book mark and memorandum pad which is easily insertable into and removable from the book; and a still further object is to construct a device in which the memorandum pad can, with great facility, be swung up from its position clear of the leaves to enable them to be turned over. 7
My invention consists of a combined book mark and memorandum pad all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a plan view of an open book showing my device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top view of a closed book showing my device in position therein, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of my device showing the memorandum pad broken away.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the book and 2 the leaves thereof. 3 is the binding.
My device comprises a member 4 which well may be of wire inserted between the back of the binding 3 and the back of the leaves 2, and having hinged to it the member 5 which also may consist of a wire.
The member 5 is inserted into a pocket 6 provided on one vertical edge of the memorandum pad 7, said member 5 protruding below said pocket and being provided with a member 8 threaded or otherwise detachably mounted upon its lower extremity. The memorandum pad 7 is swingably mounted on the member 5 so as to be capable of being swung over from the right hand leaf to the left hand leaf, or vice versa, depending upon which page the reader is reading.
A lug 9 is also provided on the hinge to which a pencil 10 is connected by any suitable means, such as the string 11.
1929. Serial No. 365,116. r
In applying my device to a book, as above stated, the member 4 is inserted between the back of the leaves 2 .and the back of the binding 3 and the member 5 and its attached memorandum pad 7 swung down between'any two desired leaves of the book. When the book is closed, as shown in 'Fig. 2, the memo.- randum pad and member 5 will serve as-a book mark, and when the book is open the memorandum padcan be so disposed as to 'lie on the page of the book opposite to that being read. Thus notes can be'readily made of the, matter on the page read. For instance, when the reader is reading the left hand page the memorandum pad 7 will be disposed to the right, as indicated in Fig. 1, and thus notes of the matter on the lefthand page can be made with facility;-
When the reader hasreached the end of the left hand page it is only necessary to swing the pad 7 over against the same when the right hand page willbe exposed to view, and notes can now be made of this page.
Whenv the reader has reached the end of the right. hand page the pad 7 and member .5, can be swung up until clear of the leaves .of the book, when the right hand page can be turned over and the pad swung down again.
The member 8 is provided to prevent displacement of the pad 7 from the member 5, but, in addition to serving the above purpose it will prevent accidental-"displacement of the member 4, member 5 and pad 7-from the book when the same is closed.
From the above descriptionit will be apparent that I have devised a simple and effective combined. book mark and memorandum pad which, in addition to acting as a book mark, will enable notes to be made with great facility, and, moreover, which will not be susceptible to displacement as is at-present the case, I H
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A combined book mark and memorandum pad comprising, in combination, a tongue member freely insertable between the back of the leaves of the book and the binding, a second tongue member connected to the first member, a memorandum pad removably mounted on the second member and insertable between the leaves of the book, and means engageable with the lower edges of the leaves of the book for preventing the displacement of the first and second members and pad from the book when the latter is in its closed position.
2. A combined book mark and memorandum ad comprising, in combination, a tongue mem er freely insertable between the back of the leaves of the book and the binding, a second tongue member connected to the first member, a memorandum pad removably mounted on the second member and insertable between the leaves of the book, and means engageable with the lower edges of the leaves of the book for preventing the displacement of the memorandum pad from the second member as well as preventing the displacement of the first and second member and pad from the book when the latter is closed.
3. A combined book mark and memorandum ad comprising, in combination, a. tongue mem r freely insertable between the back of the leaves of the book and the binding,
5 a second tongue member connected to the first member, a memorandum pad removably mounted on the second member and insertable between the leaves of the book, and a third member detachably secured to the second member below the pad, and adapted to be engaged by the lower edges of the leaves of the book.
4. A combined book mark and memorandum ad comprising, in combination, a tongue as mem r freely insertable between the back of the leaves of the book and the binding, a second member hinged at one end to the corresponding end of the first member, a memorandum pad, means on the memorano dum pad for receiving the second member, and a third member detachably secured to the second member below the pad, and adapted to be engaged by the lower edges of the leaves of the book.
5. A combined book mark and memorandum ad comprising, in combination, a tongue mem r freely insertable between the back of the leaves of the book and the binding, a second member hinged at one end to the corresponding end of the first member, a memorandum pad having a pocket disposed along one vertical edge for the reception of the second member, and a nut member threaded onto the lower extremity of the second 56 member, and adapted to be engaged by the lower edges of the leaves of the book.
