This invention relates to a pen and pencil holder, and. more particularly, has reference to a holder adapted to be detachably secured to a notebook, pad, or other type of book.

It is a source of inconvenience to students and other persons that when a pencil or pen is desired, it is difficult to locate. Pen and pencils carried by students are often lost, or otherwise mislaid.

Accordingly, it is an important object of the present invention to provide a holder that is adapted to be secured to the cover of a notebook or pad, or to some other book, which holder is adapted to efliciently retain pencils and pens, so that they are always available when needed.

Another important object is to provide a holder of the character described that can be manufac tured at very low cost, because obviously, should such ho der be complicated to an extent to increase the cost of manufacture, its commercial impract cability would then prevent it from be ing an advance in the art.

Another important object is to provide a pen and pencil holder which, when secured to a notebook or the like, will not interfere in any way with the regular use of the notebook, and will not jam in the notebook, or otherwise require special formation of the book.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts. hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arran ement of parts w thout departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawin Figure 1 is a pers ective view of a pen and pencil holder constructed in accordance with the invention. as it appears when applied to a notebook cover.

Figure 4 is an edge view of the form of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings in detail, at 5 I have des gnated the cover of a conventional looseleaf notebook. It is understood that this constitutes in itself no part of the present invention, and furthermore, a looseleaf notebook has been illustrated purely for the sake of example. As will be apparent from the description to be provided hereinafter, other forms of books or notebooks can as well be used.

The looseleaf notebook cover illustrated is equipped, as usual, with the ring holder 6.

The holder in the invention embodies a fiat plate 1, which can be of any suitable material,

1 :Claim. 01. 21 149) such as thin metal, plastic, Celluloid, or the like In thepresent instance, though not necessarily, the plate is relatively elongated and rectangular in general conformation, and adjacent one corner, there is provided an opening 8, adapted to receive securing means 9 whereby the plate is detachably secured to the notebook cover 5.

In the opposed end edges of the plate I, and substantially intermediate the side edges of the plate, I form notches l0, which in the present instance are illustrated as dove tail notches, these being preferred for the purpose of preventing a resilient pen and pencil holding means to be described from slipping out of the notches.

A pair of opposed side notches H are formed in the side edges of the plate, adjacent one end, and a pair of opposed side notches l2 are also formed, adjacent the other end of the plate.

Passed through the notches II and I2 is the elastic band I3. A single endless band can be used, as illustrated, this band being passed through all the notches I! and I2, so that there are spaced resilient supports for the upper and lower ends of pencils or pens P, which supports are disposed transversely of the plate 1 as best seen from Fig. 1. 1

Another elastic band I4 is passed through the end notches I0, and the use of this band divides each of the transverse su orts, so that each transverse support is perm tted to accommodate more than one pen or pencil P, as il ustrated.

It may be noted that in use. the pen and pencil holder constructed in accordance with the invention will be out of the way. and will permit fully normal use of the notebook cover to which it is attached. Additionally. it wi l not recu re modification oi the conventional form of notebook cover, and thus can be purchased as a separate item. apart and distinct from the notebook, and capable of ready a plication to the notebook cover. In use, if the plate I swin s to one side, that is, to the right in Fig. 1, during the normal carrying of the notebook. it will simply swing against the ring holder 6. If it swings in the other direction. that is to the left in Fi 1, the holder is so placed and of such s ze that it will not swing beyond the edges of the cover.

In the forms illustrated in Fi s. 3 and 4. the plate I is the same as is il ustrated in the first form. However. the different attaching means is used with the plate, the attaching means of Figs. 3 and 4 being such as will not require the format on of a hole in the cover 5. Thus, instead of passing the securing means 9 directly through the notebook cover, the securing means is used to holdthe clip [5 to the plate 1, and the clip I 5 is simply slipped over one edge of the notebook cover.

I believe it is obvious that the invention may quite possibly take other forms than those illus- 3 trated, and it is understood that the invention embodies such other forms as are within the scope of the claim.
