(Cl. 28T- 42) 4 Claims. l
This invention relates to a bookmarker, and more particularly is designed and adapted for use as a marking device in 4association with a looseleaf binder, ledger book, appointment pad, or similar memoranda or recording pads or books.
The principal object of this invention is to adequately facilitate the marking of a book or pad without injury to the book or the pages therein, and at the same time, to securely retain in a position adjacent the book or pad, a writing implement or instrument.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combination bookmarker and writing implement holder, which is integrally formed with a page of a book, or more particularly with a looseleaf page, insertable within a looseleaf binder or the like.
Another object of this invention is toprovide a simple and efficient bookmarker, in combination with a writing implement holder, which is conveniently detachably or permanently secured within a book or looseleaf binder and which durable and efficient in operation.
These and ancillary objects are attained by this invention, a preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description, by way of example only, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a looseleaf page,
showing a bookmarker and writing implement holder integrally formed therewith, the marker and writing implement container being constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view in perspective of the combined looseleaf page, bookmarker and writing implement holder;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of Figure 2, showing in more detail the laminated page and holder;
Figure 4 is a plan View of a modification of this invention;
Figure 5 is a perspective View of a bookmarker and pencil holder, constructed according to this invention, and shown in attachment with a looseleaf binder; and
Figure 6 is another modincation of this invention in plan view.
Various types of memorandum pads, ledger books, purchase and consignment books and other oficial recording books are constructed and arranged in the form of a looseleaf binder, of suitable sturdy material, comprising a pair of opposed outer covers, joined by a plurality of vertically spaced rings or the like. These books and similar other pads are employed for particular recording purposes and, as such, usually contain ainumber of blank lines or spaces, which are to be filled in by the user with the necessary data. Thus, a user, when utilizing the book or pad, is at all times turning from one page to ano-ther to record the information or to calculate or evaluate the already recorded data.
Thus, it is the primary purpose of this invention to provide a bookmarker for such a pad or book and to provide in association with the bookmarker means for retaining a writing implement or instrument in close proximity to the book or pad, so that the user will at all times have a writing instrument handy for adding data to the pad or book.
A meritorious feature o-f this invention resides in the provision of a pliable and flexible bookmarker, which is formed integrally with a page of the looseleaf binder and which projects outwardly therefrom. An intermediate connecting portion is provided to connect the offset bookmarking portion with the page of the book and is suitably scored so as to be entirely flexible to enable the bookmarker to be positioned in any of the pages of the book. The intermediate portion also serves a dual purpose, in that it provides means whereby a pencil may be retained adjacent the book for ready utilization.
Referring now more particularly to the draw-A ings, wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout, and in particular to Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, wherein a preferred embodiment of this invention is set forth, by way of illustration only, it designates the unitary looseleaf page, bookmarker and writing implement retainer. The unitary section may be formed of any suitable pliable material, which is flexible and yet sturdy, such as oil-treated paper, cardboard or the like. The unitary device i0 comprises a pair of juxtapositioned blanks l2 and i4 which are of similar shape and design and are suitably joined together by conventional means such as adhesive, paper glue, or the like. The blank i 2 comprises an elongated rectangular body or page section I6, of any suitable width and length, dependent upon the size of the looseleaf holder and having longitudinally extending opposed sides i8 and 23. Medially projecting from the side edges I8 of the body section i6 is an intermediate connecting member 29, having suitable vertical scoring imposed thereon, so as to render the intermediate connecting member or section 2li flexible. The intermediate portion 2! has integrally formed on its opposite end an extending or projecting offset or marking section 22. The marking section 22 is elongated and of a width similar to that of the body or page section i6. At the juncture point of the intermediate connecting section 2D and the marking section 22 there are disposed opposing arcuate shoulders 2Q and 26.
Blank lll, having a similar body or page section 3d, an intermediate connecting section 28 and an offset marking section, 3d, is suitably adhered to' the blank l2 so as to form the laminated unitary structure IQ. The opposed intermediate connecting sections 2i) and 32 are unattached and form a sleeve 32, whereby a writing instrument or implement may be frictionally held therein, Thus, with referencev to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown, a pencillS fric.- tionally retained or held within the' Sleeve' 32, with the bookmarking offset section, 38formed of the laminated oifset sections 22 and 3B, which are securely adhered together, folded` over Aon the body or page section,ul`, formed from the body sections l2 and Ul, which are suitably secured in juxtaposition. Y
Suitable means areV provided to detachably or permanently secure thebodyuor page section 43 within a looseleaf binder and includes a plurality of vertically spaced longitudinally extending openings or apertures 42, formed in the longitudinal side oi' the bodywsections l2 and Hl, opposite the intermediate section, and adjacent the free side thereof. The alignedapertures i2 serve as a retaining means for the marker and writing implement holder and arexsecured toa looseleaf holderby inserting the Yrings or similar kbinding means within the openings or apertures d2.
Thus, it can be seen that the laminated page or body section d@ may be secured within a looselea holder, either at vthe front, the middle or the rear section thereof, by means of the spaced vertical openings, G12, and thus, at all times, the bookmarker 38 and the pencil-retaining sleeve 32 will be disposed in an operative and convenient position.
Referring now to the modication illustrated in Figure i of the drawings, there is shown a unitary laminated pliable and flexible blank 5d, having an oblong body or page section 5,2, which has a plurality of vertically spaced apertures or openings 5d disposed adjacent to the ire-eside, 55, thereof. The opposing side 58 of the body or page section 52 has its corner edges rounded and is integrally connected with Aa sleeve til. rlfhe sleeve or intermediate portion @o serves as a connecting link or section between the body or page piece 52 and an oifset angular marking or positioning section or piece 62. The intermediate or connecting sleeve td has a pair of opposed vertically spaced arcuate apertures Vor openings 62 and Gd formed adjacent the open ends thereof. The arcuate openings 62 and 6d in the opposed sides of the sleeve lill define or form opposed end straps 5% and 68 and intermediate opposed connecting flaps 79. Thus, with reference in particular to Figure 4, it can be seen that apencil or similar writing instrument l2 is positioned within the sleeve 6i! and is securely frictionally retained therein by means of the opposed straps 86 and E3 and the opposed connecting naps 70, which serve to strengthen the connection between the body section 52 and the offset marking section B2. By forming the sleeve with the opposed strap sections 55 and S8 and the opposed intermediate connecting iiaps 1B, the connection is rigidied 'and the retaining strength of the sleeve is increased, as the opposed straps 66 and B8 serve to individually retain the pencil at each end of the sleeve and the opposed connecting flaps 'ID serves to retain the pencil or similar writing instrument, 72, in the main portion of the sleeve. Also, the arcuate openings S2 and ed serve to provide viewing space-s, so that commercial indicia or other advertising matter, subscribed on the writing instrument, may be perceivable.
As shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, the unitary laminated bookmarker and writing implement retainer 5i! is secured within a looseleaf binder or holder 'l by means of the connecting rings 13, which are inserted through the openings or apertures 5d formed in the free end 56 of the body or page section 52.
Referring now to Figure 6 of the drawings, wherein another modication of this invention is set forth, there is shown a marker similar to that of the marker 5@ disclosed in Figure 4 of the drawings and having a body or page section Yall, having rectangular or angular apertures or openings i forme-d on the free end thereof. An offset oblong marker or pointing section 8% is integrally connected with the body or page section S2 by means of an intermediate connecting portion or sleeve 83. The intermediate connecting sleeve 86 is formed of opposed strips of pliable flexible material, medially and integrally secured to the marking section 8E and the body section 82, and having vertical scoring 9i? disposed thereon, rendering the intermediate connecting portion or sleeve 8&3 flexible and pliable so that the marker section S may be moved in angular or arcuate movement to be secured in marking position, in any desired position or placed on any page within the book.
Thus, it is apparent that there has been provided a simple, efficient and durable bookmarking device, which is integrally formed with a ller page or page insert `for a looseleaf binder or the like. The provision of a sturdy and iiexible boo-kmarker also incorporates the provision of a writing implement or instrument retaining means in association therewith. Accordingly, the employment and utilization of the permanently attached bookmarker and writing implement retainer, formed integrally with a page or iiller page of a book binder, renders more convenient and speedy the task of a user of a ledger book, such as a bookkeeping or accounting book.
Since many otherpurposes and modifications of this invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art, upon a perusal of the foregoing description, in View of the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that this imparts nothing by way of limitation, but that suitable changes in size, style or arrangement of parts may be eifected without a departure from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A bookmarker comprising a unitary laminated blank, forming a body section, a marking section laterally projecting from one of the longitudinal side edges of the body section and adapted to swing inwardly thereof, an intermediate sleeve hingedly connecting said body section and marking section, vertical scoring on the opposed sides of the sleeve, vertically spaced openings disposed on the free side of the body section for securing the body section within a book binding, and means for frictionally holding a writing instrument within the intermediate body section, an intermediate sleeve .portion hingedly connecting the body section and marking section, and adapted to frictionally retain and embrace a writing instrument, meansfor securing the body section to a book, said sleeve strips disposed adjacent said openings.
4.
