Description
Aug. 5, 1952 A. H. FREBER PAGE HOLDER FOR BOOKS Filed March 14, 1949 Inventor Fig. 2 I8 26 /0 Arthur H. F rebel Patented Aug. 5, 1952 2,606,042 PAGE HOLDER FOR BOOKS Arthur H. Freber, Salt Lake City, Utah; Virginia S. Freber, executrix of said Arthur H. Freber, deceased, assignor to Virginia S. Freber, Salt Lake City, Utah Application March 14, 1949, Serial No. 81,307
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in page holders for books, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a very simple device of this nature which may not only be conveniently and effectively employed for holding the book in an open position at a predetermined page, but which will also permit the pages to be quickly and easily turned as they are read.
This object is achieved by the provision of a holder which includes in its construction a back member formed with a slot to receive a group of book leaves and a book cover. if necessary, together with a pair of substantially triangular front members which are adapted to lie on the open pages of the book, this being so arranged that the pages or leaves may be turned over from one side of the holder to the other.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its convenient use, in its adaptability for use in association with books of various sizes, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially in the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention in situ on a book and embracing one of its covers;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the invention as being applied to the leaves of a book;
Figure 3 is a perspective view, similar to that shown in Figure 2, but showing the invention in position on the leaves;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the invention per se; and
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a page holder for books, the same being designated generally by the reference character l0 and preferably being formed from a single sheet of material which provides a flat back member I2, a pair of substantially triangular front members l4 and a flange or web 16 which connects the front members to the back member, as is best shown in Figure 4.
The back member I2 is formed substantially at the center thereof with avertical slot 18 2 which has an open lower end and the portions of the back member at the sides of the block are preferably shaped as shown in Figure 4.
The front members l4 are disposed forwardly of the back member l2 and are spaced therefrom by virtue of the web or flange [6, it being noted that the front members are located at the sides of the slot I8 in the back member. The front members l4 have upwardly convergent adjacent side edges 20 and terminate at their lower ends with forwardly arcuated apices 22.
For purposes of reinforcement, the slot l8 need not extend upwardly to the flange H3, so that the side portions of the back member are connected together by a transverse portion 24 at the top of the slot. Similarly, the side edges 20 of the front members [4 need not extend to the flange It, so that the two front members are connected together by a transverse portion 26.
When the invention is placed in use, a book 28 is simply held open as shown in Figure 2 so that a group of intermediate pages or leaves thereof are separated from the forward and rear groups of pages, after which the holder is applied to the book by simply inserting the intermediate group of leaves 36 into the slot, as shown.
After the holder is applied to the book so that the upper edges of the intermediate group of leaves 30 are engaged by the upper edge 32 of the slot 18, the book 28 may be laid flatly on a desk, or the like, and the intermediate group of leaves 30 may be dividedsubstantially in half and each half inserted under the front members l4 so that the latter engage the top pages of the open book as shown in Figure 3. In this manner, the book will be held in its predetermined, opened position, and when it is desired to turn a page while reading, that page, indicated at 34 in Figure 3, may be simply withdrawn from. under the adjacent front member at one side of the holder and transposed to a position under the front member at the remaining side of the holder, as indicated by the phantom lines 36. Needless to say, the arcuate apices 22 of the front members I4 will facilitate turning of the pages without any possible damage.
When the invention is in use while reading the first few front pages or the few last pages of the book, one of the book covers (front or rear as the case may be) may be embraced within the holder as indicated at 38 in Figure 1, while the remaining cover is outside the holder, as indicated at 40.
While in the accompanying drawings, the invention is being shown as applied to the top of 3 the book, it may, Of course, be applied to the bottom of the book, if it is desired to do so.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure, and accordingly further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 182 A page holder for books formed from a single sheet of material and comprising a back member provided with a book leaf receiving slot having an open lower end, a forwardly extending flange rigid with the upper edge of said back-member,
and a pair of substantially triangular front members rigid with and extending downwardly from said flange in spaced relation to said back member, said front members being disposed at the sides of said slot and being adapted to engage top pages of leaves interposed between the front and back members, said front members having upwardly convergent opposing edges and the lower end portions thereof terminating in forwardly arcuated leaf guiding apices.
