PAPER FASTENING DEVICE Filed Dec. 26, 1953 NVENTORZ.
ATTORNEY A. POWELL 2,014,780
Patented Sept. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAPER FASTENING DEVICE Alvin Powell, Lafayette, Calif.
Application December 26, 1933, Serial No. 703,928
3 Claims.
This invention is for improvements in letter binders for securing letters in a folder in such manner as to render each individual letter easy of access and in which the individual letters may be turned and read as the leaves of a book.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a letter binder for letters when filed in a folder which will be yieldable and conform to the flat surfaces of the letters within the folder as the accumulation of letters within the folder is built up and not cause a bulge along the folding line of the folder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated that will be efficient, reliable, durable and securely retain letters filed in a folder in a neat and orderly manner in the form of a book.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the specification thereof proceeds.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:-
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a folder with the sides extended and letters secured therein by the improved binder.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a fragmentary section of a folder in open position with the improved binder secured to one leaf of the folder.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a fragmentary section of a folder in open position with the improved binder in locked position, and secured to one of the leaves of a folder.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the binder in upright position shown as attached to a section of one of the leaves of a folder with the binder in locked position.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the improved letter binder as an entirety, the same preferably comprising a base l0 and a locking strip l2 extending from one end of the base, and provided with a free end. Said base is provided with an elongated aperture or slot l I adjacent the transverse median line thereof, and said locking strip is provided with a similar longitudinally disposed slot l6 adjacent its free end. The base I0 is also provided with a hook-like extension l5 extending from the end opposite to the strip l2, and shaped to provide a notch I1.
In practice, each of the sheets M to be bound together is provided with a perforation l3 adjacent one edge, through which the locking strip is threaded in a manner indicated in Fig. 1. The
free end of the strip is then passed through the base slot I l and the hook l5 passed through the slot in a manner to force the apex of the notch il into engagement with the side of said slot, thus forming a substantially square ring for 5 firmly and positively securing the letter sheets l4 within the folder covers of folder 2|, which is folded along its median line 18, thus forming covers l9 and to either of which base It! may be secured in any suitable manner, preferably by 10 cementing.
The base H3 is secured to cover 19, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing with the inner wall of aperture H in alinement with the line of fold l8 of the folder forming covers IS! and 20.
Reduced portion I2 is scored at predetermined spaced apart points Z2, Z3, 24 and 25 to facilitate the folding of the strip I2 in the forming of the substantially square ring 26 for binding the letters It into a sheaf as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all the forms in which it may be made, or all the forms of its use what 25 is claimed is:
1. A letter binder comprising a'body of flexible material provided with a base having a slot therein, a locking strip extended from one end of said base and insertable through said slot, said strip 30 also having a slot therein, and means at the other end of said base engageable with the slot of said strip for preventing withdrawal of the end of the strip through said base slot.
2. A letter binder comprising a body of glazed flexible material provided with a base having a slottherein, a locking strip of reduced width extended from one end of said base and having a free end insertable through said slot, said strip also having a slot therein, and means at the other end of the base engageable with the slot of said strip for preventing withdrawal of the free end of the strip through said base slot.
3. A letter binder comprising a body of flexible material provided with a base having a slot therein, a locking strip extended from one end of the base and having a free end insertable through said slot, said strip also having a slot contiguous to its free end, and a flat hook-like member at the other end of the base constructed and 'arranged to engage the slot of said strip for preventing withdrawal of the free end of the strip through the slot in said base.
