TUNITED". STATES 1,577,52 PATENT orrlcs.
JAMES D. DOUGLAS, 0]? DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
rorrrromo;
Application filed September posed outwardly at the apex, and an element flexiblyatta'ched usually at the apex, so that it may be set in an upwardly. inclined position. In this manner I providea portfolio which may be employed as a triangular stand, and, in addition, the element above referred to acts as a support against which upturned leaves may rest so that they are visible from'the same side of the portfolio as the downturned leaves which rest against one of the cover members.
:Another object of the invention is to provide a portfolio having an extension on one of its cover members which will form the third sideof the triangle, or? fold inwards over the leaves when the portfolio is closed; the element and its support are also so constructed that they will lie substantially flat against one of the cover members when the portfolio is in closed position. i
. Having thus briefly outlined the major purposes of the invention I will now proceed to describe an embodiment thereof with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which the various views are drawn to different scales.
Figure 1 illustrates the portfolio with one of the cover members partly open.
Figure 2 shows the portfolio with one cover member more fully open.
Figure 3 is a view of the portfolio in use as a stand, and
Figure 1 shows a modified form of support for the element.
In the drawings, 1 designates the front cover and 2 the back cover, both of which parts are made of strong rigid material. The flexible portion 3 which connects the inner ends of the cover members, has a loose leaf binder 4 attached to it, and the element 5 is also flexibly secured to the portion 3 in proximity to one side of the loose leaf binder. Integral with the outer end of the back cover is a flexible portion 6 of sufficient Serial No. 57,538.
length to fold over the outer edges of the leaves 7. At the outer end of the flexible portion 6 is an extension piece 8 which is in turn secured to the outer strip 9 by the jointlO.
The inner surface of the front. cover is .provided with fasteners 11 which are adapted to cooperate eitherwith the fasteners 12 on the outer surface of the extension piece 8, or with the fasteners 13 on the outer strip 9. v i
On the inner surface of the back cover bracketsl l are provided for the supporting member 15 which is pivotally mounted therein, and is adapted either to engage clips 16and 17 on the back of the element 5 so that the latter may be held in an "upwardly inclined position, or to liesubstant ally flat against the inner, surface of the back cover? In Figure 3 a spring clip 17 is shown in addition to the ordinary type of In Figure 4 a modified form of construc tion is shown; a' tab 14 is secured to the inner surface of the back cover and has a flexibly connected extension 15 which may either be folded back against the inner surface of the cover asshown at 15 or brought into engagement with a lockingniember 17 secured to the reverse side of the element 5. This form of constructionl sometimes employ for small portfolios in which the weight of the leaves is not sufficient to tend to bend the unsupported sides of the element.
When the portfolio is in closed position the flexible portion 6 is folded round the outer edges of the leaves 7 and the extension piece 8 and strip 9 lie flat between the inside of the top cover and the leaves. The element 5 is folded back against the inside of the back cover, and the supporting memwith the fasteners 13 on the outer strip 9, which has previously been turned upwards about the joint 10. The element 5 is then raised and held in position by the supporting member 15 which engages the clips 16 and 17. Or, in the design shown in Figure 4, the extension 15 of the tab ll is brought into engagement with the locking member17 In this manner a stand is provided with the use of which two leaves, one upturned and the other downturned, are visible from one and the same side of the portfolio, whereas without the use of the element 5 this would not be the case; and again the arrangement is such that both sides of each leaf may be displayed in turn.
In the foregoing mention has been made of a loose leaf binder though obviously bound leaves may also be arranged in the portfolio. And while the preferred form of construction of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that any modifications may be made therein that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
' What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A portfolio comprising two cover members connected at their inner ends and adapted to open so that their outer surfaces are towards one another thereby forming two sides of a triangle, an element flexibly mounted in proximity to the inner end of one of the cover members and adapted to assume an upwardly inclined position, means for holding said element in saidupwar'dly inclined position, and means for holding the outer ends of the cover members in spaced relation to one another.
2. A portfolio comprising two cover members connected at their inner ends'and adapted to open. so that their outer surfaces are towards one another thereby forming two sides of a triangle, an element flexibly secured to the connecting portion between said cover members, and an extension piece integral with one of said cover members adapted to form the base of the triangle, in combination with means adapted to support said element in an upwardly inclined posiprovided for the element to positively engage the supporting means.
5. In a portfolio, the combination of two cover members, a connecting portion between the inner ends of said cover members, a loose leaf binder on said connecting portion, an
element flexibly secured to said connecting portion, and a supporting member for said clement pivotally mounted on one of said cover members, said element and said supporting member being adapted to lie sub stantially flat one on the other against the inner surface of the cover member to which said supporting member isisecured when the portfolio is in closed position.
6. A portfolio comprising two cover members connected at their inner ends and adaptcd'to open so that their outer surfaces are towards one another thereby forming two sides of. a triangle, an element flexibly mounted in proximity to'the inner end of one of the cover members, an extension piece integral with one of the cover members adapted to form the base of the triangle, and a pivotally mounted support on one of the cover members adapted to hold said element in upwardly inclined position.
