WILLIAM P. PITT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO IRVING-PITT MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF IVIIS- SO'U'RI.
GOVER-ATTACI-IING MEANS FOR BOOKS. 1,423,018 specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd July 18 1922,
Application filed September 19, 1921. Serial No. 501,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM P. PITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cover-Attaching Means for Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf books.
It relates particularly to a novel means.
for attaching the metal parts to the back of a loose leaf book.
The object of my invention is to provide novel means for attaching metal parts to the back of a loose leaf book which is sim ple of construction, cheap to make, strong and durable and not liable to get out of order, which permits of the ready assembling and removal of the metal parts, and which presents a good appearance.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away of a loose leaf ring book provided with my improved fastening means.
Fig. 2 is a top view, partly broken away, of the covers and back, the latter having sewed to it a flexible strip which forms with the back a pocket in which is shown a back plate, one of the free ends of the strip being shown underlapping the back plate, and the other end of the strip being shown stretched out.
Fig. 3 is a lon itudinal sectional view on the line 3-3 of ig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the back of a loose leaf book, 2 the covers thereof and 3 longitudinal grooves in the inner side and at the longitudinal edges of the back.
4 designates a tape or strip of flexible material, such as cloth, which is disposed longitudinally on the inner side of the back 1, and which is fastened adjacent to its longitudinal edges, in any suitable manner, as by being sewed by stitches 5, to the back 1 adjacent to the longitudinal edges of the back and between the grooves 3. The strip 4 forms with the back a pocket having open ends, and adapted to receive therein a metal back plate 6.
The strip 4 has free ends adapted to be folded so as to underlap the ends respectively of the back plate 6, as shown at the left in Figs. 2 and 8. The underlapping ends 7 of the strip 4 serve to cover the ends of the back plate and to hold the latter in the pocket.
8 designates an arcuate spring plate which rests upon the strip 4 and is adapted to have its ends overlapped by prongs 9 which extend upwardly from. the back plate through the strip 4.
The spring plate 8 supports the usual hook plates 10, which are interlocked at their inner edges and have co-op'erating hooks 11.
In assembling the parts, the back plate 6 is first inserted in the pocket between the strip 4 and back 1, the prongs 9 being extended through the strip 4 and spring plate 8, the inner ends of the prongs being bent over the spring plate, thus holding the latter to the back plate 6. The free ends 7 of the strip 4 are then folded under the ends of the back plate 6, thereby holding the latter securely in operative position.
I do not limit my invention. to the structure shown and described, as modifications within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
IVhat I claim. is
1. In a loose leaf book; of the kind described, a back of a book, and a strip of flexible material sewed adjacent to its longitudinal edges to the back and adapted to form therewith a pocket for receiving a back plate, and having free ends adapted to underlap the ends of the back plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a loose leaf book of the kind described, a back of a book having two longitudinal grooves, a strip of flexible material fastened adjacent to its longitudinal edges to the inner side of the back and forming therewith a pocket intermediate of said grooves, and having free ends, and a back 45. In a loose leaf book of the kind described, a back of a book, a strip of flexible material fastened adjacent to its longitudinal edges to the inner side of the back adjacent to the longitudinal edges of the latter and forming therewith a pocket, and a back plate in said pocket, the strip having free ends which respectively underlap the ends of the back plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WVILLIAM P. TPITT.
