Description

vi /7m l3 5 1 W. P. PITT LOOSE LEA-F- BOOK Filed Sept. 19. 1921 Patented May 20, 1924.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM P. PITT, or KANSAS CITY, MIssounI, AssIG'noIt To IRVING-PITT MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, or KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION or MISSOURI.
LOOSE-LEAF BooK.
Application filed September 19, 1921. Serial No. 501,526.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,.WILLIAM P. Prr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification. p
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf books of the type provided with conjointly swinging hook plates having ring hooks for supporting loose leaves.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a loose leaf book of the kind described, which is simple, cheap to make, which is durable and not liable to get out of order, which can be easily repaired, and which has an attractive appearance and is efficient in operation.
My invention provides further a novel spring plate which forms with the back of the book a housing for holding and protecting the hook plates.
My invention provides still further novel means for pivotally supporting the hook plates in the spring plate.
My invention provides further novel means for attaching the spring plate to the back of the book.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodimentof my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my im roved loose leaf book, portions of the covers eing broken away.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom perspective view of the spring plate and hook plates mounted therein.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4.- is an enlarged cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 1, the hooks being shown in the open position.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the back of a book provided with the usual covers 2 flexibly connected therewith.
Attached to the inner side of the back of the book is an inverted box shaped spring plate 3, open at its back and having side walls comprising longitudinal flanges 4, which extend toward and preferably against the back 1. .The spring plate is provided at its ends with two end flanges 5, which extend to the back 1, and are provided each with a longitudinal extension 6 which is secured in any suitable manner to the back 1, asby a rivet 7, which extends through the back and through a hole 8 in the exten sion 6.
Mounted in the housingformed by the spring plate 3 and back' 1, are two longitudinal hook plates 9, each having rigidly secured to it hooks 10 arranged to form, with the hooks of the other plate, rings for supporting detachable loose leaves.
The adjacent edges of the hook plates 9 are interlocked in any suitable manner so as to swing conjointly, as by means of double headed buttons or rivets 11, mounted in cooperating recesses 12 in the inner edges of the plates 9, the heads of the buttons or rivets 11 being respectively above and below the plates 9.
The outer edges of the plates 9 bear against the inner sides of the flanges 4, intermediate of'the top of the plate 3 and inwardly extending obliquely inclined projections 13 one or more of which are provided in each flange 4:. The flanges 4 exert PATENT OFFICE,
a pressure inwardly against the hook plates 9 which holds the hook plates interlocked with each other and in either the open or closed position. The spring plate is provided with lateral notches 1 1 through which respectively extend the hooks 10. The projections 13 hold the hook plates in their proper operative positions. By having the projections 13 inclining inwardly and up wardly, and the inverted box-shaped plate being open at its back, the hook plates 9 can be readily slipped into their operative positions between the flanges 4 in which positions they will be securely held Without further operation.
In attaching the spring plate to the back, after the hook plates have been mounted into position, it is but necessary to insert the rivets 7 through the back and extension 6 and upset the inner ends of the rivets.
By having the side flanges 4 parallel, fiat and at right angles to the back of the book,
punched inwardly from the side flanges, with their inner sides inclining inwardly and toward the top portion of the spring plate 3, a wide base for resting against the as shown, and by having the projections 13 I back of the book is provided, thus reducing liability of the attaching means being broken away in use, and enabling the hook plates being readily inserted while interlocked into their operative position.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as manyv modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is.
1. In loose leaf supporting means of the kind described, a spring plate having side flanges provided on their inner sides with projections spaced from .the top of the plate and on their inner sides inclining inwardly and toward the top of the plate, and two in terlocked leaf engaging members respectively operatively engaging at their outer edges said flanges and held in operativeposition by and between said projections and the top portion of said plate.
2. In loose leaf supporting means of the kind described, a spring plate having two flat parallel side flanges adapted to rest at their edges at right angles against the back leaf engaging members respectively operatively engaging at their outer edges said flanges and held in their operative position by and between said projections and the top of the plate.
3. In a loose leaf supporting means of the kind described, a spring plate having two flat parallel side flangesand means for attachment to the back of a book, the flanges having punched inwardly therefrom projections spaced from the top portion of the plate and adapted to have their upper ends form supports for hook plates, the inner sides of said projections inclining inwardly and upwardly, the flanges adapted to have their edges rest against the back of a book.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
