Description

J. .A. SMITH July 4, 1939.
HANGER Filed March 6, 1937 Patented July 4, 1939 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE HANGER John Anthony Smith, Spokane, Wash. Application March 6, 1937, Serial No. 129,479
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a hanger.
The invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a hanger for coaction with the fastener means for a plurality of elements for suspending the latter when the hanger is mounted on a suspension.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a hanger having means for coaction with a hinder or fastener, when the latter is employed for binding or fastening together a plurality of papers, prints, samples of fabrics, payrolls, etc, in a pack for removably suspending the pack when the hanger is mounted on a suspension.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a hanger for interposition between a pack as aforesaid and the base of a binder or fastener for the elements of the pack and with the hanger having means 20 for coaction with the binding or fastening members of the binder or fastener for suspending the pack when the hanger is mounted on a suspension.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a hanger 5 for interposition between a pack as aforesaid and the base of a binder or fastener for the elements of the pack and having means coacting with said base for removably suspending the pack when the hanger is mounted on a suspension.
30 Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a hanger for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily in- 5 stalled relative to the binder or fastener, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and 40 arrangement of parts as will be more specifically described and is as illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein in shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be re- 45 sorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the hanger,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the hanger 50 showing the installation thereof in relation to a hinder or fastener connecting a plurality of elements together,
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3, Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of a modified form,
55 Figure 5 is a front elevation of the modified form of hanger showing the installation thereof in relation to a binder or fastener connecting a plurality of elements together,
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6, Figure 5,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the 5 forms of the hanger installed with respect to the binder or fastener and removably mounted on a suspension, and
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure '7 looking from the opposite side. 10
The hanger is to be employed in connection with any type of binder or fastener which is formed with a base having extended therefrom binding or fastening members, for the purpose of illustrating the adaptation of the hanger with a 5 binder or fastener 8, the latter is shown by way of example of the form disclosed by Letters Patent No. 1,658,052. The fastener 8 includes a base 9 of strap-like form having extending therefrom bendable prongs [0 which are to be passed through a plurality of facewise opposed elements H and bent against the outer face of the rearmost one ofelements for connecting the elements together. It is thought unnecessary to describe the other parts of the fastener 8 as a hanger in accordance with this invention coacts only with the base 9 or the prongs Ill. The term elements is to be considered as indicating papers. prints, samples of fabric, payrolls or any articles which may be connected together by a fastener having a base and fastener members extended from the latter.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, the hanger shown is flat and generally indicated at l2. The hanger is constructed from a single piece of suitable material possessing the desired rigidity and strength. Preferably the hanger will be stamped from sheet metal of the desired gauge. The hanger l2 comprises a base part l3 of rectangular contour formed at the lower portion of its side edges l4, IS with oppositely disposed rectangular lugs l6, l1 constituting suspensions, an intermediate part l8 of less width than the part l3 and having its outer edge 19 flush with the side edge I5 of part I3 and a top part 20 substantially of the same width as and which overhangs the part 13. The part l8 merges at one end into the upper edge of part l3 and at its other end into the lower edge of part 20. The latter has a convex upper edge 22. The part 13 has its upper edge 23 formed with a curved portion 24, the inner edge 25 of part I9 is curved throughout forming a continuation of the arc of the curved edge portion 24 and the lower edge 26 has a curved edge portion 21 forming a continuation of the arc of edge 25.
b The edge portions 24, 2'1 and edge 25 coact to provide the hanger with what may be termed a cutout greater than a half circle and less than a complete circle for the purpose of mounting the hanger on a cylindrical suspension 35. The manner of setting up the hanger, as aforesaid, provides it with a suspension portion A and hook portion B extended from the suspension portion.
That portion of the base part l3 which is not provided with the lugs l6, I7 is to be of a size capable of passing between the inner face of the base 9 of the fastener 8 and an element II and in this connection attention is directed to Figures 2 and 3, and when such portion is disposed in the manner as stated the lugs l6, l1 are arranged to abut the lower edges of the prongs l whereby when the hook portion A of the hanger is in the position shown in Figure 7 the fastener 8 together 7 with the elements ll connected therewith will be suspended. 7
7 With reference to Figures 4, and 6, they disclose a modified form of hanger indicated generally at 28 and formed of a base part 29, an intermediate part 30 anda top part 3|. The part 29 is of the same contour to that of part l5 with the exception that the part 29 is not provided with a suspension means consisting of the lugs l6, l1 but in lieu of the lugs, the part 29 is provided with a suspension means in the form of a lip 32. The latter is an inherent portion of part 29, and it is formed by slitting the part 29 longitudinally and transversely to form a slit 33 of inverted U-contour and then bending the material freed by the slit outwardly to provide the lip 32. The latter is formed with a'horizontal part 33 and an upstanding part 34. The intermediate and top parts 30 and 3| respectively of the hanger 28 are constructed in the same manner as the parts l8 and 20 of the hanger I2.
When the hanger 28 is in coactive relation with respect to fastener 8 to suspend the latter, the base part 29 has that portion above the base of lip 32 interposed between base 9 of fastener 8 and an element II. The part 33 of lip 32 is to coact with the bottom edge of base 9 for suspending the fastener 8. The top parts, base or bottom parts and intermediate parts of both forms of the device are termed respectively, hanger parts, suspension parts, and combined spacing and coupling parts.
What I claim is:
1. In combination a substantially U-shaped member disposed with the legs thereof substantially horizontal and the bight thereof vertical, a pair of lugs integral with said member and positioned one at an end of one leg and the other at the bight of the member, and a clip embracing said one leg and a portion of the bight thereof inwardly of'said lugs.
2. In combination a substantially U-shaped member disposed with the legs thereof substantially horizontal, a clip embracing one of said legs and a portion of the bight thereof and extending longitudinally of said one leg, and means carried by said one leg engageable with said clip to hold said member against movement relative to the clip in one direction.
JOHN ANTHONY SMITH.
